How much to spend on wedding gift?
Comments
-
I don't think that anyone should think that the cost per head for a guest to attend thier wedding should reflect the price of a gift they recieve.
Our wedding cost us over £200 per head and we specifically asked that guests did not buy for us, only that they came and share our special day with us. We did get some lovley gifts, but thier cost is and never will be the issue. It's that they were there with us.
A gift is just that - thought and given with love. Give what you feel the couple will love and what you feel comfotable giving.0 -
Thanks all, got them a nice standing lamp from both of us from their wedding list: http://www.johnlewis.com/230217126/Product.aspx I think you're right, £60 should be fine. We both earn above the national average and don't have to pay for a hotel and no more than a tenner for a taxi, but like I said we are saving for our own wedding and they are good but not "best" friends. Looks like I was just being paranoid!0

I think £60 is a pretty generous amount. We're not expecting to get back what it's costing us to invite people to our wedding. Our wedding list has items that are around the £20 mark because that's what we imagine most people would be willing to pay. The more expensive stuff is just there for wishfull thinking!A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... Yep £60 is pretty generous
Looking at what we've been bought so far it ranges between £15 per person to £25 per person for those who have bought us anything. But honestly we'd rather people turned up and joined us for the day than felt guilty about not being able to affor a present! I purposely put stuff on the list that wasn't expensive but useful and what happened? Someone bought most of them from one person! :rotfl: so much for there being little stuff for those who wanted to get stuff but couldn't afford much

Someone I know has said that her wedding will cost £10k, and she expects to get £5k back in gifts.
She is Irish and it is expected that you give 200-300 euro as a gift!
All my friends got married, a couple of years after uni, and I was still a student, and I just choose something cheap that I could afford off their gift list, probably no more than £250 -
See now it's attitude like that which I object to... I don't expect anything from anyone for our wedding - when I go to weddings I give what I can afford at the time. I really don't worry about if it matches what someone has paid for having me there... Surely they would invite me because they want me there?DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! I am off to Italy in May for my cousin's wedding (although the couple are Irish). There's me OH and two kids (9 & 11), how much do you think is reasonable there? I thought £100 but my colleagues say £50. I am just conscious that they are feeding four of us and we couldn't eat out for £50, especially not a FIVE course meal!!0

But are you having to pay to get yourselves out there and for the hotel? All that should be taken into account too... If £100 is an amount you are happy with then go with that, if it's going to be a struggle then go for what you can afford...
I'm with Tine, we're inviting people that we want to spend the day with not people who might bring us a good gift... We're not expecting a lot at all...A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls...
