Smaller portion went to school today, so I'm off to find the lunch box. TBH I think it's a play issue. Eat lunch or play?? DD2 is definitely a play kind of girl and would rather be out running about so I think I might have answered the question. The portion sizes she gets aren't big by any means but I think I will cut them down more to see how we go.

Once again, thanks for the replies you're all :A
  • Lunches are coming home again :(

At least this time they aren't being hidden. When I asked her why she wasn't eating the lunch after me buying the bits and bobs specially for her, she just shrugged and sain "dunno"

    Any bright ideas now, anyone?????

Did you read the reason my son stopped having lunches? maybe it is nothing to do with lunch, just friends?

Banning nuts and seeds because of one child is p*ss poor school management if you ask me.

Political correctness, incompetence of the head teacher, bad management, knee-jerk reaction and incorrect actions taken from poor risk assessment and plain laziness of staff all rolled into one.

Next they will be banning use of the playground, glass in windows, electricity, corners on desks etc etc etc (coz they are dangerous)

    Do you really believe this?

Some children's allergies are so bad that if one child puts their sandwich on a table, then 4 hours later the allergic child touches that table, then eats something afterwards, they could have anaphylaxis and die. Do you really think that is political correctness gone wrong? I am sure you wouldn't if it was your child who had a life threatening allergy.

I know a lad whose girlfriend went for a curry 3 hours before meeting him. Turns out the curry had some traces of nut in (she didn't realise). Then when they met later they had a hello kiss on the lips, two minutes later the guy was dead.

DD is only 10 and still at primary school, all kids on same lunch break so I think it might be just that she wants to go out and run about as much as possible. Not that she's on a different break to her friends :)

In our school they can go out as soon as they have finished, the Dinner Ladies encourage the kids on school dinners but tend to leave the pack ups alone - encourages them to wolf the food down on lunches and leave food on pack up !

  • I would maybe trial her doing her own lunch for a week or two, tell her put what she fancies in the lunch box and you will be surprised at the balance as most kids will choose by instinct what is overall a healthy diet.
I did this with my son and he really put thought into what he choose but I did tell him as he was old enough to plan his meals he would be expected to choose a good balance and just hoped for the best.
    Jess.
  • I went through a bit of a phase when I was about 13 of not eating my lunch cos I thought it made me look cool infront of my friends, i would have a bite or two and throw the rest in the bin saying I wasn't hungry (although I always felt guilty about wasting food, but I knew if I told mum I didn't want so much food she would go on about it till the cows came home)

I grew out of it after a while when I got too hungry :D

Maybe ask her what her friends have for lunch, or try different breads, I find sandwiches totally boring, and struggle to finish them, but the same filling in a brown or granary bap will be devoured in minutes :)

when my son hides food it's the deception that upsets me the most, not the thought of him going hungry.

it started again when he started high school. it's a big school and he was bullied for a while. he just wants to stick to his friends and not stay behind eating while they run off to play.

i know they're not the healthiest of crackers but i give him hovis crackers - they're more like biscuits :o

my boy is tiny and i worry that he doesn't eat enough but he really has a very small appetite and will only eat a small amount no matter what i give him. as long as he drinks, and eats his fruit i don't mind whether he eats food or not. he takes a frube or choob sometimes, they are very quick to eat because you just squeeze the fromage frais into your mouth. crackers are good because he can run around with them in his hand. choobs are less than £1 for a pack of i think 6  frubes are more expensive but are often on bogof but watch the dates on them.

i think the friends thing is more important than food really, he's practically an only child and doesn't have any local boys to play with so his school time is important playtime.

i have told him i want him to be honest though, and not hide things.

This is what gets me too. Well today she went to school with a HM version of attack a snack wraps. It went down very well and the portion sizes last night, I let her tell me how much of each item she wanted, so in her lunch bag today we had..........
1 tortilla cut into 4 pieces
2 slices chicken roll cut in half
6 small thin slices of mild cheddar
    some tomato ketchup
2 small pots of fromage frais

Lunch box has come home empty and she seems to be happy enough. She's still wanting a segregated pot which I have had no luck in finding. I even looked in the chinese supermarket today when I was in Belfast, to no avail. Will trot off now to check Amazon and Ebay to see if I can find anything there.

The idea of the froobs/choobs sounds like something she would enjoy, especially if it had been in the freezer it would help keep the lunch cool too. Will look through all the ideas again and will see what she wants next week for lunch. School is off now until Wednesday for an exceptional closure and the May Day holiday.

    Thanks :)
