I wish I was living near you to come round and TRY to sort this out as I feel as eager as you are to see the end of this dilemma!

back to nail biting now! :rotfl:

I must admit I had noticed how far away you were. Shame, it would have been so easy. This is the thing we are all waiting to see what it finally is that does the trick. My money is on the rust being the problem now (or is that wishful thinking?).

I feel the same. I hope cleaning the rusty and dirty ABS rings will cure the brakes' problem. It can be wishful thinking though, in which case, ....shall we leave it till then?!!lol :D

    Hi

I don't know if you have got some, but you might be interested to know that LIDL has got some wire brushes in last week. A set of 6 of different sizes for £1.99 :money: that fits to the drill. They might come handy when trying to clean the ABS rings.

OK OH has cleaned up the ABS rings. No change there so he started looking at the back sensors so that he could take a reading with the multimeter. He wasn't able to get into them at all as the position they are in you cannot get to to put the two prongs from the multimeter in. He had a look around the boot etc... to see if there was any wiring there he could take a reading from but wasn't. He then decided to unplug each abs lead in turn and take the car for a spin to see if it made any difference and stopped the problems.

He first unplugged the front passenger side and took it for a spin. Made no difference still had the problem.
He then unplugged the drivers front side and took it for a spin. Made no difference still had the problem.
He then unplugged the back passengers side and took it for a spin. The noise stopped and all is well.
He then unplugged the back drivers side and took it for a spin and again the noise has gone and all is well.

So it seems that it may be something to do with the rear abs system in some way. And that both sides unplugged make the problem go away. Is there something that is shared between both sides on the back ABS system that could be tested or replaced?

A silly question, did he connect the back passenger's one back when he disconnected the back driver's one when he took it for a spin?

Did he take resistance readings for both of the rear wheels' sensors?

Quite interesting developement, I must admit!

Yes he reconnected them. He only had one disconnected at any one time.
He couldn't take readings for the back sensors because of the position of them. He couldn't get at the bit that he needed to put the prongs of the multimeter in.

So it gets more interesting but I do feel like we are narrowing the problem down a little.

Try to Check the wiring to the box underneath the passenger seat.
The sensors are connected to the 35 pin plug as follows:

    Front Left: 4-6
    Front Right: 11-21
    Rear Left: 8-9
    Rear Right: 24-26

Sensor resistance there should be between 500-2000 ohms
Pins 1 to 18 are in the upper row,
pin 1 at left facing (female cable) connector
Pins 20-35 (less pins than above) are in the lower row.

    1.....18
    20...35

Hope this weekend is the end for this dilemma!

PS Sorry for replying late. We had some friends over!
