Tesco fiddling petrol calculations?

I don't know whether anyone else has noticed this, but recently, Tesco have stopped printing receipts at their petrol stations. I didn't notice till I thought I'd been charged incorrectly. But, there was no way to prove that I'd had x litres of petrol so I couldn't do anything about it. Otherwise I'd simply have multiplied the price per litre by the number of litres to see the discrepancy. When I went back to the petrol station they claimed it 'wasn't possible' to track the individual transaction but they would happily write out a VAT receipt for me, but with a rough calculation of the litres added. I refused this but since then when filling up, have had to actually ask for a receipt to be printed and listen to them whimper and mutter.

I suggest that all of you who use Tesco Petrol Stations ask for a receipt if they don't give you one, as they claim that 95% of customers don't want receipts. If we all do this then they will change, hopefully! In response to their statistic of 95% not wanting a receipt, I've done my own little survey and as it happens, 100% of my friends, colleagues and neighbours DO want a receipt for petrol, or anything else purchased for that matter. This makes me wonder whether they have some sort of slimy plan to recoup some of the losses involved in giving clubcard points for petrol, as this is almost equivalent to 1p a litre now that we're almost at £1 a litre.

Think about it - nobody would really suspect them for something like this because we all think that Tesco are clean and honest. Think again!

Once again, please, please ask Tesco Petrol Stations for a receipt and if they refuse, just ask why, if they have nothing to hide! If enough people do this then maybe they won't be able to swindle us much more, or do whatever it is they are doing.

Thanks everyone :D

I amnot quite sure what you think Tesco are doing here???
I always get a full VAT receipt for fuel as I need to submit them with my expenses claim.

I work in an accountant's office and cannot understand why all receipts aren't vat receipts. When someone sends in all their receipts at the year end, there are loads of duplicates where the first wasn't a vat receipt so a second receipt has been printed at the customer's request and it is my job to weed them out!

What a waste of paper and ink! Oh well, keeps me in work

I'm saying that they are deliberately not issuing receipts because that way people won't see exactly how many litres they bought and therefore won't be able to calculate any discrepancy.

I have found two discrepancies in the last month - both where the price on the receipt (91.9p) was different to the price on the big sign outside and that on the LCD screen at the pump (90.9). I realised that the price on the pump and my receipt was calculated using the higher price which makes it look like a technical glitch at the pump screen and on the sign. It's a clever little money-spinner really.

I haven't spotted them doing this to me, I use Tesco for fuel quite a lot...if you check the price on the pump agrees with the big sign and the amount you pay is the same as the total on the pump there shouldn't be a problem. If you think they are cheating you should take it to Trading standards.

  • I'm glad you haven't had this problem. Technically it falls under their policy of "ovecharging" so they should really give a full refund.

Do you always ask for a receipt?

I wonder if this would be within the realms of their overcharging policy?????
Probably not...but would be great if it was! :o

Yes I do because I have to submit receipts to the company to claim my expenses. I would take it up with Tesco and if no joy go to Trading standards.

  • I have already taken it up with the Manager of Tesco in my local store but he isn't really bothered. Trading Standards, here I come :D
  • If you think about the amount of Tesco filling stations, and the amount of transactins each one will handle each day, Not printing a receipt is a massive cost save for them. Hence why they have to manually request to print one off for each customer.

Have got to say in my opinion the majority of people in the UK will not be interested in a receipt (the smart consumers on here being the exception). Plus it is better for the environment.

I have found the opposite with our local Tesco. They always used to ask if you wanted a receipt, now they simply print it and hand it to you.
