Steam Cleaner - is it worth getting one?

  • Steam cleaners are the way forward, especially for floors. What people forget is that normal mops (that sit in buckets of filthy water) grow bacteria and the water is never hot enough to kill the bacteria, even if you use detergents etc. All you're doing is moving the bacteria across your floors, even if you can't see it.

Steam mops/cleaners are definitely much better and (as some of the posters have mentioned in this thread) they don't leave your floors so wet. The steam will kill most bacteria, so you won't have to worry about adding chemicals, although some units like the Vax S2S allow you to add detergents (their own brand of course).

I would recommend any of the following (more info if you click through to the review website):

    Vax S2S bare floor pro
    Morphy Richards 70495

There is also the H2O X5, which is ok, but customers have reported problems with the flimsy structure.

I bought a 'little yello' refurbished from ebay.
So far it has defrosted 2 freezers (one was horrendously iced up)and a really badly over frozen fridge.
Cleaned cabinets and handles in the kitchen.
Zapped the floor in 2 bathrooms and restored a kitchen carpet that was splattered with stuck on food and blobs of candle wax.
Also a conventional electric hob and a ceramic hob.
It got wet gloss paint out of my jeans too when we were doing some decorating.
When the weather warms up I am going to steam all the mattresses and the car seats.

I have a little hand held one from lidl too which is handy for small jobs as it heats up almost instantly.
  • My nan has a Dirt Devil Steam Devil, bought in 2005 never used...UNTIL NOW.

Tried it on the sides of the bath tiles & removed black grot instantly, then used the concentrator on the toilet & it made the steam swish round the toilet! Then used it on the bathroom carpet, came up a treat.

Now can't wait to see if it will get dried candle wax out of the carpet!

I'm after some steam cleaner advice. We recently had our kitchen floor re-done in white gloss porcelain tiles with light coloured grout. I'm finding that a regular mop leaves the floor streaky and doesn't clean the grout. Would a steam mop also get the grout clean or would I need a steamer with a concentrated nozzle for this? Or should I get a steam cleaner with a floor attachment? So much choice! Thanks

Buy a normal steamer & they usually come with a little circular brush that attaches onto the end of the concentrator nozzle, use this for your grouting & use the normal floor head for the rest of the floor. Little brush worked wonders for our bathroom tiles, blasted away years of dirt & grime in a flash (but without the flash!) xx
  • Thanks for the advice on here, just reading through it all. I broughta steam mop for £39.99 from D*nelm which was brilliant for cleaning a hard floor and 1/2 my bedroom carpet, then it packed up (failing to heat properly). Took it back and exchanged. Used the new one for the rest of the carpet and another one and it did the same again!.Apparently they have had a lot of these returned.Though they had a previous batch in and there had been no problems with them.
Got a refund, then headed to Arg*s to stump up an extra £20 for a vax stick steam cleaner. This has also packed up after a short while. So thinking carefully what to go for next.
    Back on the trains again!

Just like what I've said before, if you can go for a multi-use steam cleaner (not an upright type, a cylinder type) which will have many attachments & this will be able to clean floors, also windows & tile grouting etc. My nan's Dirt Devil has a concentrator nozzle which was great for getting black from the corner of the shower & I also used the floor nozzle for the carpet cleaning. Shame DD don't make them anymore, it's a powerful lightweight little thing & heats up 1 Litre's of tap water in an impressive 4 minutes.

Try & see if you can get one that's a cylinder type & shop around for the best deal on one, don't buy another steam mop & don't go for the little crappy handheld ones either. Have a look in LIDL & ALDI, they have their own brands of them for about £70.

    Hope this helps

I have a Polti too which was gifted to me via freecycle when OH had C Diff and needed to deep clean the house, especially the bedroom.

The muck it fetches off the kitchen floor when I use it once a month, (I mop the floor in between) is astounding. I have also used it on the carpets.

You can buy cloths for it, but I knitted a cloth in basket weave which does a super job and gets chucked in the washer with the whites on a 60o wash. You can also but an iron to use the steam generator to power the steam. I am saving up to buy one, my present iron leaks.....
Can I please ask , what kind of wool/fabric did you use and did you follow a pattern?

Has anyone got the Morphy Richards 9in1? Im looking at getting one this weekend when Robert Dyas have 20% off £75 spend. Is it worth it?

Im looking for one that cleans the kitchen floor, laminate in the living room, upstairs carpet and round the cooker/oven.
