If there isn't a "proper" legal speed limit sign, no properly spaced street lamps, no repeater signs - why not ?
The 70 limit can't apply as, strictly speaking, it isn't part of the motorway - which is why the AA & RAC can't fix your car in one.(Strictly speaking !)

    :confused::confused:

It isn't part of the motorway but it is a road accessible to the general public and therefore subject to NSL.

If it is subject to the NSL why does it say 20mph at my local service area ?
  • How would I know? Perhaps you could ask the MSA management who will of course have all the paperwork in order for the 20mph limit, and the limit sign will of course follow the design specified in the Road Traffic Act?

I'd put money on that 20mph sign being erected by some numpty, and there being no legal basis for it.

I am afraid there are still too many people on the motorways today for who 70mph is just too fast. If you let them drive faster they will and then the problem becomes even worse.

Then you have the people doing 40mph in their Micras. When approaching at 70mph the potential for trouble with a 30mph difference is bad. make that difference 60mph and you see the problem.

Then you get the people who see the speed limit as a target speed. These are the same people who think that 30mph is a safe speed in a built up area BECAUSE THE SIGN SAYS SO even though the reality means that 20mph is probably better.

In this country the standard of driving is not great. Then remember that half of all drivers are of below average standard. Then add in the drivers who currently drive at 90mph on the motorway who will then drive at 130mph instead.

You may think you have the skills to drive at such speeds but there is a 50:50 chance your skills are below average so maybe you are wrong.

Get the driver skills up, upgrade the roads to cope with such speeds (most central reservations are only built to withstand an impact of 74mph) and then enforce that upper limit with a passion (101mph in a 100mph limit equals instant 12 month ban) and then maybe.

i think this is probably the most sensible comment on this subject.and the reason why we dont have 100 MPH limits.

The current situation is a workable compromise. ie: travel at 85 indicated and generally be left alone. A friend of mine who knows some traffic police said that their attitude was that if you managed to spot them and slow down then you were capable of driving safely at that speed. So they sit on bridges and anyone who doesn't see them and who is speeding gets pulled over.

Camera vans on bridges is slightly different though. They like a particular bridge on the motorway near Bridgend because it's right after a corner.
    Happy chappy

So I can drive at 100mph in an MSA then ! Just as I could on a private road.

Anyone using the M180 up to S!!!!horpe will have seen the scamera van parked on one of those police only humps off the hard shoulder, on a left hand bend, and just after a bridge.

Now if that doesn't prompt panic braking I don't know what will. There are safer ways to stop people speeding.;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
