There is a list of whats on offer,i have "Rescue, Recovery, At Home & Onward travel" i have it as vehicle based not personal.

I would visit the website to see how it compares if you want personal cover i presume it loads the premium quite a bit.

EDIT: Just checked online it ads £25 to the premium for joint personal to cover you in any car and £8 for single personal in my case anyway :)
  • Thanks deanos,

Ah, that may be it then. I specifically wanted the personal cover so I guess I have to pay for it. Even so, it sounds like there might still be lots of discount left to be negotiated.

I need to find another major provider to play off against the RAC now.

    MM :)

:j Been having a look around and came across these guys:
    http://www.firstcallmotorbreakdown.co.uk/ukcover.cfm

    Summary of Cover: £39.95
Roadside assistance, roadside repairs, assistance at your home, onward destination service, cover for any driver, cars, vans, and motorcycles up to 3.5 tonnes. caravan or trailer attached to your vehicle at the time of breakdown (up to a maximum 25feet) 1 hours roadside assistance, up to 6 call outs in any one year, wheel changes (as long as you have a serviceable spare tyre and wheel and are able to provide a manufacturers key to remove any locking wheel nuts).

Anyone dealt with these, looks pretty good for the money and give onward destination service plus home start

I have, unfortunately! You can read the details of my experience with them in my earlier post. Like you, I thought it looked a good price for the level of cover advertised until I actually needed to call them out on a trip back from Scotland to London...

In my case, their 'onward destination service' just amounted to an offer to pay for a train ticket home, leaving me to come back and collect the car later at my own expense (I was still a couple of hundred miles from home). They didn't even consider the carfull of luggage and equipment loaded up in my car that had to come too - no way I could lug that lot on a train all by myself! In the end I had to argue with them on the phone till I was blue in the face, going through their t&c's with a toothcomb and threatening them with Trading Standards & quoting the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations before they caved in and agreed to pay for true onward travel including the car. By the time we got going it was a couple of hours after I first called them out...

My impression of them after first hand experience and talking directly to the guy that seemed to run the operation was that they are a bunch of cowboys who shouldn't be touched with a 10 mile barge pole. It may seem like cheap cover but if my experience is anything to go by they'll cut costs wherever possible and leave you high and dry to save a buck when you least need the aggro! The cover certainly isn't what it appears on paper.

Just looked at their site (been redesigned a bit since I joined) and I see their pledge "customer service is our priority" - hah! Haven't laughed so hard in a long time... :(

Can I be thick for a moment please?

AutoAid and GEM - are they two different companies? Have GEM put their prices up over the last 12 months?
  • On the subject of Motor Break Down insurance policies I am looking for the best & cheapest motor breakdown insurance policy which includes Parts and Labour charges. The AA do a ₤500 parts and labour cover for and additional ₤58 pounds per year on top of your required AA standard breakdown policy (see http://www.theaa.com/services/breakdowncover/parts_labour_home.jsp) however I remember a year or so ago that for the same price of around ₤60 the RAC offered ₤2500 parts and labour cover!!

WOW. So should your car breakdown following a mechanical failure that can not be repaired by the roadside then these insurance policies would pick up the repair tab. The AA still offer there policy but it appears that the RAC's more impressive one seems to have disappeared from there web site.

Does anyone know of an alternative to the AA parts and labour cover? I have spent some time this morning Goggling today but can't find any like for like comparables.

    Thanks, Sel :)
