Yesterday the renewal quote for my & the OH's roadside recovery from the AA came in for £114.50. As we have motorbikes, there aren't many options that cater for motorbikes & frankly, when I really need a breakdown service, I don't want to find out they're not up to scratch.
However, I decided to check out the price of the RAC like for like cover and give the AA a call to say I was thinking of leaving them. It turns out the have a specific line for this (not maskerading as something else). I explained I had been able to find a cheaper like for like quote (with the RAC - I didn't mention this, though I was later told they keep tabs on the RAC's wedsite for current offers).
They had a look at my account, which showed 1 call-out in 7 years (the OH didn't replace the oil cap on his motorbike after checking the oil properly!) & offered a 25% discount. I thought that was nice, but it only really took me to the same price as the RAC was going to give me. Personally, I thought the discount offer came too easily, so I told the person I was speaking to I had to discuss the matter with the OH. She did try to tell me that if I phoned back I may not get the same deal.
She was right - I was offered a 30% discount when I called back. That landed up saving me £30 odd quid & proving, if you don't ask, you don't get!0
