    welcome to Bismarck

Thanks for that Twink. I've had to shelve my plans for this week...On Monday afternoon at work, one of the nice tutors I work with was scoffing a student's biscuits (they're not supposed to have biccies in class of course!) and I discovered that she likes all biscuits, but particularly hobnobs. 'Right' I thought and decided to make some to take in on Tuesday afternoon, but I've been ill since then. Never mind, I can do them another week.

    Afternoon all :hello:

    ((((Penny-Pincher!!))))

I'm having a good day so far today. I woke up without my alarm - a sign that I actually got enough sleep. And I am VERY popular with my colleagues due to the magic of Twink's hobnobs :D

Got my ballet class tonight :j :j then am off home to sort through some paperwork and do a bit of tidying up. Might not bother cooking tonight, I certainly don't need to - I've got plenty of pre-made HM stuff in the freezer. On the other hand, I might try concocting a red and yellow pepper soup - I've made red pepper soup before, and yellow pepper soup, but never tried combining the recipes before.

redruby - the general advice I'd give about buying an opera selection CD is go for something that's only got proper opera singers on it :o What I mean is, although the "crossover" and "classical charts" type singers might be enjoyable enough in their own right, what most of them sing isn't really representative of opera. And much of the really heavily-marketed stuff that gets into the classical charts is this stuff, or a mixture of this and "proper" stuff, and the marketing people expect the audience to be too ill-informed to know the difference. Think of it as the opera equivalent of a ready meal, rather than the home-cooked food of properly trained opera singers whose voices can fill a theatre without a microphone ;)

Edited to say: oh and one more really important thing - do look for a disc where the booklet includes the words and translations of the arias, and preferably also gives some context to each item, so you know what it's about :) (most do, but some of the really cheapie labels which you can pick up in places like The Works do fob you off without!)

Classical selection CDs are very easy to pick up second-hand in charity shops (especially Oxfam Books & Music) for not a lot of money, but for buying new, Naxos is the most reliable "budget" classical label. They have a couple of discs called Best of Opera I and Best of Opera 2 which have a good selection from French and Italian 18th/19th century operas plus quite a bit of Mozart (who was Austrian but wrote most of his operas in Italian). They don't touch much on anything German or Czech or Russian or English, and they don't have anything from the 17th or 20th centuries, so I think they're quite limited in that sense, but certainly give a good selection of arias from operas you will have heard of. It's also a compilation of a wide selection of different singers and orchestras, so if you don't like the voice of one of the singers, you're not stuck with them for the whole recording :D

Alternatively, if you see a particular CD you like the look of and want to know whether I think it would be a good "starter", you can always ask my opinion... If you get on with your first disc, I can always recommend something a bit more challenging, like a selection of slightly less well-known music, or a recording of a whole opera :)

Also, whereabouts do you live? I might be able to point out a live performance you might enjoy locally...

Anyway, see you all later - and hope the advice is useful, redruby (am happy to answer any other questions either on the board or by PM :))

    Love Rzl xx

(((hugs))) to you Lyndseyann-I'm lucky I don't have high bp. Mine is on the low side. Got to take my DD back to hospital tomorrow about her bp (it's very high) fingers crossed they will finally treat it instead of all this endless monitoring!!! I wouldn't mind but last time we went it was 150 over 100 and she's only 14.
