If you use a 4mm cable to connect, and it's close to it's capacity, and it gets hotter than 30C, it's bad.
Without seeing the installation, and knowing the cooker, I can't say what to use, but without seeing it, I wouldn't be using 4mm.

Hmm, thanks. Yep - I see your point and appreciate your response. However I've yet to find a supplier of 6mm (and it seems to be a common issue) ... but I'll keep looking.

    Thanks,
    Nige.
  • Hi,

    The search continues.

Given that the page h05bbf.html on elproman.se (use Google)

lists H05BB-F as being up to 2.5mm, and this site:

and h07bbf.html on elproman.se (use Google)

lists H07BB-F as being up to 16mm. Would it not be a safe assumption to say that as the hob is listed as requiring H05BB-F that using 4mm cable from TLC would be fine? It meets the current requirements, and just about meets the heat requirements.

Sorry about the links - the forum won't let me post full ones.

Or have I missed something (further)?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I have a concern that if I get an electrician in, they'll just try and fob me off and install something unsuitable. I'd like to source the right cable myself and get the installation Part P tested once done.

I can't see why a cable that is rated at the correct voltage, heat resistance and current will not perform no matter what the thickness is.

    Regards,
    Nige.

The "thickness" (by way of each conductor's cross sectional area - measured in square mm) is totally connected to the current (load) carrying capacity! A cable too thin for the current it must carry is a fuse! At 4mm², with your load, there is no leeway at all - dependent on the de-rating factors (temperature, bunching, insulation & fixing method, length) then 4mm² is very much borderline for your application and has no margin for safety at all. This is why we are suggesting 6mm² is the correct size to use. (all these numbers are the cross sectional area of the conductors, not the overall thickness of the cable, you could have 1mm conductors in a cable 40mm "thick"!)

Have a play here to see what the effect of changing the load, length and installation method is on the required cable size (just as an example though - your required cable type is not on the list!)

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've seen that and I understand that 4mm is on the limit. However, the thing is 6mm cable doesn't seem to be readily available - or I've yet to find a source. I've emailed all of the major suppliers CEF, N&E, TLC etc. and they've all replied and told me that they don't stock such a thing.

So, I don't really see that I have much choice ...

Just get a 2M length of 10mm twin and earth from B&Q and cut to length

Urrm, are you a troll or have you failed to read this thread?

They're both, Nigel ! They've done the same on other threads! Ignore them - at least I've got a couple of C&G qualifications, 20 years experience and Public Liability Insurance to back up my advice.

I'm a troll for pointing out where over-specced cable is available (you're looking for 4mm, I suggested 10mm which should more than cope with the temps)? Can't win - no need to bite my head off.

Don't forget you're asking for advice on a money saving DIY forum...

You were wrong because you only took into account the required current loading of the cable - not the requirement for it to have a heat resistant covering to withstand greater temperatures than normal PVC covered twin and earth can cope with! That is what is "special" about the cable AEG have specified to be used, not it's thickness/current carrying capacity. What you suggested was therefore not "over-specced" but unsuitable, for that reason. The size might have been right, but the cable type most certainly wasn't.

If you had indeed read the other posts carefully you would have seen that this was why several of us (professional electricians to boot) had already said T&E was unsuitable in this case, irrespective of the size.

Having been in the same position as everybody else here of trying to track down the elusive H05BB-F cable for my Electrolux induction hob, I can now share details of how to get your hands on it.

I tried searching all over the internet, which only brings up technical specs of the cable and other forums with people asking 'where can I buy it!', not to mention various electrical outlets such as CEF etc. However, it is available from Electrolux (though I had to convince the salesperson at the other end; She told me they didn't supply them and I had to get one from B&Q or Wickes, but as we all know, they don't stock it).
If you telephone Electrolux Distriparts on 01325 302464 and request to purchase part number 330 64 85-00/8 you will receive the H05BB-F cable. It costs around £25 inc. delivery.

I hope that makes life a lot easier for people that buy an Electrolux/AEG/Zanussi induction hob in future, as from experience I can honestly say that it's been a real pain locating it.

    Good luck!
