I am going to speak to Argos tomorrow, and ask if as well as repaying people's £5s they would be willing to donate one TV to a childrens hospital in the name of MSE'ers as an apology

    Let's see how we go.

Brilliant! That will be worth all the time, arguments, vents everything!
PS Martin - when you here all these people demanding your opinion - do you ever feel God-like? Do you remember the fuss about people putting "Jedi" on the religion part of the census form? Come the next census, I think the most popular religion in the UK will be MSE!

  • That would be great if they would donate one. But to be honest I think we mse'rs should be stumping up for one as well.

I think the thing that has come out of this is that it is the taking of the money that people felt formed a contract.

One thing to consider though is the consequences if this was the case for little online shops. It could be disasterous as they rely on payment processors such as world pay processing the payments straight away. They never see the credit card details etc. If a contract was formed at that stage the little guy could be wiped out by 1 mistake and a swarm of buyers.

Great point rowantoad. Personally, when it comes to the freebies board, I dont go for the firms that I perceive to be "small businesses" or charities. However, this whole site - this whole internet - relies & fails on principals.

I'd love to see the the amount of money generated in interest by these 'random' and 'silly' (but seemingly often) 'mistakes' versus the negative publicity it costs them .
See my earlier post and do the maths for yourself - Argos are losing shed loads of cash on this.
Maybe they should offer the customers a free £10 voucher for any hassle caused
Maybe we should give THEM £5.44 each for the hassle WE have caused!!? Probably 9,990 of the 10,000 people who ordered knew absolutely that this was a mistake not a genuine offer and there was little chance of getting it.
Let's be honest with ourselves - we took this up just to try it on, then cry like babies when we got caught out. I have exactly the same problem with my kids ;)
It's symptomatic of our society - no-one is willing to accept responsibility for their own actions any more - I'm surprised the ambulance chasers haven't been round with the leaflets saying "been missold something online? Where there's blame there's a claim".

No no kids are watching too much telly ;)

A fund raiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina would be good though!

don't forget that the board members have to lavish themselves somehow  and they won't let customers or staff getting in their way
While we're in rant mode can I speak up for big business - at the risk of being flamed by those MSErs who think we exist solely to destroy companies.
Yes businesses exist to make profits - and the Communists amongst us think that is a bad thing. But a LOT of people depend on companies making profits for their jobs. It is a cut-throat world out there (ask any small businessman or woman) and competition is fierce. If businesses don't make profits they go bust and people end up on the dole - just look at Rover to see what happens when the economics aren't right.
The idea that companies exist just for the "fat cats" to "fleece" the poor down-trodden masses is a myth perpetuated by politicians and newspapers because it suits their own agendas.

I agree - I think that would be a nice gesture too. I mean, come on folks - who here is actually missing their £5.44 ?

Indeed, if everyone who went for this offer, knowing darn well it wouldn't be honoured, clubbed together we could probably buy an entire TV studio for Great Ormond Street.

    How about it, Martin ?

On the 3.am radio news they said argos has said sorry to the people who ordered the 49p TV and that is was just a mistake.all 38.000.

i did not order one myself but the people saying do you expect to get a TV for that price remember Woolworths honoured their mistakes on the PS2 and the sagem mobile and hi-fi internet errors

It would appear so, but didn't ebuyer do likewise earlier in the year and get away with it? It seems that Trading Standards were unwilling to follow the matter through, but given my own experience of TS it doesn't surprise me! They are about as much use as a bottled fart.

    ouch that hurt! ;)
