It's a 94 Citroen ZX. It's still running, but I ran into a post and the fender and bumper would need to be replaced to be considered roadworthy. Rather than spend that money (plus whatever money I'd have to spend to get it to pass it's MOT in June), I've decided to go carless through the spring and summer at least to save money and be all environmental and stuff.

I understand that scrap cars now are actually worth a little bit, but are there any pitfalls I should look out for? Or will I be safe just calling around to the ads in the back of the local paper? I googled around, and one of the sites said

I'm not really worried about the car being a death trap--it was safe enough for me to drive around in for a year and a half--but I don't want to get in any trouble. Can anyone give me any advice? I'm feeling a little out of my depth.
dont listen to that ad. they should take your log book and give you the yellow slip( I think its yellow its the selling to trade slip) which you send to dvla

If you are selling a car for scrap you need to get an end of life cert off the breaker.

You do know that you are replying to a thread started over 4 years ago dont you;)

Motorwise.com I've been using... Paid Cash on Collection and Price is up there with what I can get locally... Suits me as they collect and I dont need to be at home as GFs here all day now.

    Instant online Quote aswell!!

But surely theres plenty of decent Scrappers round Birmingham?

I've just looked at them but they only pay after collection so how do you know they will even pay you.

You can have a cheque which may bounce, bank transfer within 3 days of collection may never happen and they already have your car. They do offer same day bank transfer for £5 but again they have your car so what if they don't pay you ?
Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.

I agree, don't listen to that ad. It's over 4 years old.....

hint: check the date of the post you are replying to before replying....
  • i know this thread is an old one, but my mate got fined for getting rid of his car through a dodgy company. when it wasn't disposed of properly he was traced and found he was still responsible for it without a certificate of destruction.
best advice i can give is check its a company that is properly licensed with the environment agency - there are loads around but this one is nationwide and properly certified: motorwise.com
    happy scrapping

    And spam reported...
  • Anyone can come to this post from any search engine if he is searching something related to scraping a car. I also come from Google & i think every post will gets helpful unless admin disable to it.

If any vehicle having trouble again & again , & if its giving lots of expenses to repair then its wiseness to find a best auto scrap yard, first get price quote from them, ask for mode of cash they are paying, compare with others & sell to one paying high.
  • tonard56 - You should (or if the company / driver collecting your car is helpful they will) fill in section 9 which is the yellow part 'selling or transferring your vehicle' and you will need to send this part to the DVLA to let them know you no longer own the vehicle and stop any fines from coming back to you.

I used Scrap Car Comparison and they could tell me how many collectors were covering my postcode and what the price range was. No scrap yard or collector should be paying you in cash anymore as the government made it illegal in October 2013 so they pay you by bank transfer or cheque.
  • Hi, just wanted to get some advises from much experience users here. I just renew my MOT for £300 and paid for tax disc £225 (last week). However, my cost of insurance is so high (i am foreign student in UK, due to type of license maybe). I manage to get better insurance price previously when I was put as second driver on the previous owner policy. Now I own the car so I need my own insurance but for a quote over £2300 seem ridiculous as the car price worth half than that. I don't what should to be done. I've come out with several options:

    1) Scrap get some £150 + refund for just 2 days tax disc
    2) send them webuyanycar station as they would pay slightly higher (average £230) but I no longer hold any insurance. It would take me around £30 for one day insurance.
    3) sold them on gumtree but it will take time to get genuine buyer. The time running out as the tax disc date is consumed.

    Any idea? :(:(:(
