one of the local tescos does this - so do sainsburys.

i think the reasoning behind it is that it encourages you to walk round the shop rather than head straight for the reduced fridge. also it distributes the reduced products to those who would have bought the same product that day - rather than the bargain hunters.

I know that the large Tesco on Burnt Tree Island, Dudley has a whoopsie fridge with shelf nearby.

I noticed too that Sainsburys in Selly Oak, Bham also has a whoopsie shelf - nothing on there for me but it didnt stop me from looking.

I think the 'whoopsie' shelves are very unpopular with staff as they are manhandled badly by the swarm of bargain hunters who swoop on the trolley of reduced items before they can be placed on the shelves.

I have seen one poor girl, who had to do the 'final reductions' on a Sunday afternoon, intimidated into reducing almost everything to 5p by an aggressive couple who held the rest of the customers at bay with two trolleys. I know that was extreme, but it must be very unpleasant for staff to have to run the gauntlet.

There's no intimidating the staff at our Asda! - they just threaten to walk away with the gun and not reduce anything at all. They're worse than doctors receptionists ;) !!!

In the last couple of weeks, I noticed the reduced stuff right next to the full priced goods in Asda. For example, reduced chicken thighs were right next to the regular chicken thighs. Actually this way works better for me - I have a shopping list, and meal plans, so if I find a particular item reduced, even better. Before, I could never see anything I really wanted on the 'special' shelves.
    Cogito, ergo sum.
  • Do you think they may have cottoned onto the fact that people may just come in to buy woopsies, then make up some of their menu's from that? Or like me not too bothered ,what I eat (within reason). Wonder how long before it causes lots of hassle to the staff.:rotfl: Ofcourse we here are a bit more savvy! than to fall for the look around all the store while your here. Whose going to be bothered doing that?;) :D

As its school holidays, it will be Longwell Green, Bristol. And looking at the time, I'd better get a move on!
