I open all my bags of flour up and chuck them into a (clean and dry!) brewing bucket that I keep in the corner of the kitchen - I have made a little pink padded cushion to go on the top of it so that it doubles up as a kitchen stool!!
Only problem with that is that if you are unfortunate enough to get flour weevils they will infest the whole lot. The only time (in nearly 40 years of baking) I have had them it was from 'economy' flour from what was then Safeway. They got into every plastic lidded container I had in the cupboard and of course all the flour stored in bags. I used to keep several kinds. I have read that if you freeze your flour before storage, it kills off the weevil eggs so they can't do any damage. Once it has been frozen you can store it at room temperature. The eggs are so tiny you can never tell they are there until they hatch. Extra protein, as my daughter's partner says. In jest, I hope - he's a chef

speechless-smiley-040.gif I should have said that I do stick the flour in the freezer before storing, as I read the same a while back too and having had the little blighters once before (luckily they were confined to one bag of flour), I am obsessive about them and stare at my flour for a while to see it if is moving before using it!!

Many apologies, after promising the soft roll recipe, and making ds hunt through his school books much to his disgust, he has handed it in as it had evaluation questions on. But he will get it returned next term and I shall post then! Pain as wanted to make some for tomorrow for picnic lunch, and dd3 isn't that keen on sarnies made from hm bread, involve too much chewing apparently, she has to stop talking, lol!

Flour now 75p in our Asda, still 48p in mr t's though. After reading about someone stockpiling dove organic wholemeal from asda when it was on offer, I had a look and found some for 55p in the special diet section in asda, none on the normal flour shelves, wonder why! I don't have some kind of weird flour obsession, just in case anyone is wondering!, there are six of us though and numerous friends of the children who seem to have moved in! We eat a lot of bread and flour based stuff!

I thought pasta would be cheaper in asda, and still reeling from it being £2.97 in mr t's, was not happy to find it was that price in asda now as well. How much does everyone pay for a large bag of pasta, any tips on where else I can buy it?

I love pasta, chuck it in microwave, tip on sauce from freezer and dish up with bread and salad, bargain meal. Not much of a bargain at that price though!
GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£400

I've just been in Waitrose (my once a year trip ;-) and the price of their own strong flour was £1.25. Allinsons was £1.29. The price of grain may come down this year, last year's was sky high because of the floods here and the droughts elsewhere in the world. Local farmers were watching the price of grain rise all summer, but it didn't help them because their own yield was bad. The price of flour however is likely to stay up until competition between the supermarkets drives it down.

just had a thought....how long do you need to put flour in the freezer for, to kill any weevil eggs, if there are any? can i just put it in for say 24 hrs then take it out? would that be long enough to kill anything?
