I was in ASDA yesterday and bought 10 bags @ 48p

Just read this and hubby is gonna run me back to get some more and I really hope it is still 48p :(

I also stocked up on pasta and then today they announce a rice shortage !! Why all the shortages at the moment ???

Stocked up yesterday in Tesco and it was still 48p, doubt it will be for long though as value flour had gone up and wasn't much cheaper - can't remember exact price. Was already in shock from big bags of pasta being £2.97 - think I shall be making that even for everyday use at that price

Something to do with poor harvests and converting previously used agricultural land into growing bio fuels apparently. Programme on radio four the other day was all about the rice shortages, some countries apparently have an export ban. Chap from Oxfam was warning about starvation on a worldwide scale last night.

If that's the case, starvation will come to us eventually....when we've worked our way through the cupboards and 'shopped from home'! I know it's a serious matter, but at the same time, I wonder how long it will be before/if it will affect our eating habits.

Have you tried using either half and half with plain or all plain in breadmaking? Can work out much cheaper.

Is the Doves Farm wholemeal not still on offer? I bought loads when it was on offer in Tesco and Sainsburys, still working my way through it.

Lil-_me, I'm new to bread making can you use normal plain flour to make bread?

I bought some from Tesco yesterday at 48p, only one bag though. Think I'll pop in on the way home and grab another few bags incase they put it up then.

Not too long if wheat prices continue to rise, it'll make so many things much more expensive that people will have no choice but to change their habits, well unless they have endless amounts of money and aren't in the least bit old style. Perhaps it'll make people think more about what they eat and make us all a bit more price and health concious - well it might

Hi, you can but the loaves probably won't be as light or rise so much, think strong flour has a higher gluten content? I've found normal plain flour works better for hand made bread than it does in a bread maker, but not as well as the strong flour.

    HI unixgirl,

I know that squeaky doesn't buy bread flour but uses normal plain flour for breadmaking. Like lil_me I use half bread flour and have value plain flour and it works well.

Thanks Mummysaver. I'm new to breadmaking and at the moment am trying out different recipes (so if you have any good ones please pass them on!). Making all my bread by hand at the moment as am saving for my breadmaker.
