Sorry if this is a bit off thread but I was browsing and was not sure about who qualifies for the over 60's pass. Am I right in thinking that whatever my means I would qualify for free bus travel at 60?

    yes i believe so.
people also qualify who are diabled or who have a condition that prevents them from being able to drive, epilepsy for example.
  • Hi all, my husband has a buss pass and, as we live in Wales, he can only use it in Wales (so English buss passes cant be used in Wales etc)
Now I know they aren't meant to be used to go galivanting (not sure how to spell that) but when he visits his rellies in England, he really misses being able to just pop to the local town on the bus etc, and as we all know the short journeys on the buses are very expensive. I dont know if Martin reads all these message boards, but maybe he could help campaign to enable everyone over 60 who lives in the UK to be able to travel free anywhere in the UK. Any thoughts?
look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.
  • This is a joke, right?
  • Sorry tinkerbell84, not sure what you mean?

You think over 60s should get free travel all over the UK whenever they like?

    Why???

How does your husband get to his rellies in England? Why shouldn't he pay for his visits to town?

Isn't it enough that he gets free travel within Wales?

Is it not enough that Martin campaigns for us to save money without getting involved in politics?

  • Lovelyjubbly - I think it is great the way it is now. The papers often carry articles on the cost to local authorities and the burden that is becoming too heavy. This country simply cannot afford to give freebees, but what they have done for the over 60's is great but I think any expansion of the system would never happen. Nothing is ever free, it has to be paid for somehow.

It might be cost effective to keep us wrinklies off the roads in our old cars:
Saves congestion leaves the roads free for business..
    Saves building new roads.
Contributes to the UK's carbon saving targets.
Mind you so does riding a bicycle, which I use for journeys less than 30 minutes..

It's about time we renovated Offa's Dyke and Hadrian's Wall!!!!!!;)

But, back to the subject of passes.

Although I've 'planned' loads of interesting trips, I've only managed local West Midlands journeys until today when I ventured into Staffordshire!

What a shock to be asked where I was going and told to take a ticket!!!! We West Midlands lot just wave the pass and walk on by.

It was quite a problem as i didn't really know where I was going until I got there! I could point it out on a map but had no idea what the stop was called.

One disappointment round here is the free-and-easy system on the trains. (West Mids. passes allow travel on trains within the county.) No one came anywhere near to ask to see tickets all the way from Birmingham International to Wolverhampton and back. And the stations have no barrier controls either. Is it any wonder the railways struggle to make money?
  • I am a bit late responding to this - been very busy lately - flying instead of bus. Here in Tunbridge Wells the bus driver issues a ticket but we are not asked where we are going. You are right about the trains. Been on many a journey this year and only 50% were checked.
