my line has been tested for it's limit and I'm over it's range already,

what does that mean? please explain? As i understand it, if a line will only support 3Mbs ADSL then this is a physical restraint, placed on the line by the laws of physics and the way BT manage profiling, do AOL have a way around these laws? Perhaps for their next trick they could work on gravity, so my scales would how a little less next time i stand on them
To change ISP would not have given me a faster download speed
    is this another AOL lie?
Unless you are on a very long line, possibly already suffering connectivity issues (not how i read it in this case) then going from ADSL AOL to the ADSL2+ O2 would be unlikely NOT to increase the speed, possibly to as high as 20Mbs

    ;)

What I meant is my phone line can only support 3.5mps download speed. My current package is for upto 8mps, hence more than my line will support. If I had gone ahead and changed ISP, the speed would not have increased because the line is currently limited to 3.5mps (quoted by BT and tested at BT.com).

I test my download speed regularly to ensure it is performing well, and always manage to obtain 3.4/3.5mps speeds.

without details (connection speed, att and snr), its hard to say the difference, if any, with any accuracy, but moving to the adsl2+ service could have got you to around 5.5-7mbs, it would be very, very unlikely for you not to get a noticeable improvement.

edit (again) - i never readily accept anybodys' estimate of what a line will support, with decent equipment and tools it is often possible to improve matters, in my case 2 BRAS profile steps

I am on AOL and im getting great speeds BUT i am still on AOL's US network , everyone is going over to carephonewarehouse network and thats when the slow speeds start just go on over to think broadband's forum and you will see what i mean loads of posts about slow speeds and disconections

Getting a cheaper deal will lock you into a new 18 month contract, i would wait unti you get moved over to see what its like.

You can check below what network you are on if it starts with 172 its AOL, 92 is Carphonewarehouse

That's one hell of a long line! i bet your pings are quite high to UK servers?!

Most UK ISPs use BT's network as its a bit closer to home

  • I'm with O2 and on the 8mb package (or the up to 8mb) and am getting 5.6mb but i'm still finding downloads really slow.

I have phoned O2 once about it and a very helpful guy explained to me that i may need to delete some of my history for eg. websites visited, cookies, temporary files.. It worked well for the next week but i'm having problems again, O2 was a great deal @7.50 a month & £40 cashback through quidco but when i had tiscali 1mb it was never this slow..

How are you getting the 5.6mb figure ?

Have you run a speed test http://www.speedtest.net/ or going by what they have told you or your router stats ?

I was prepared to give O2 a try, but have since discovered that there is a 10gb download limit, plus you have to pay an extra £5 per month anti-virus charge and there is little feedback from customers on the service and reliability

Firstly, there is no 10gb limit on O2, nowhere in their T&C does it quote that.
Secondly, you don't have to purchase anti-virus software from O2, it is not compulsory, there are several perfectly good free anti-virus programmes available on the internet.

You are probably having your speed restricted then because the network is busy , run a speed test http://www.speedtest.net/ and post the results
