In many for these forms, there are many repeat questions.

Is this a hand written one, because I can't seem to type the details.

In all honesty, this is a really long process...for people who are just visiting the U.K. is the process loooooooonnnnnnnnggg as visiting the U.S.?

Applicants resident in the United Kingdom will be required to show strong social and economic ties to the U.K.' Return flight ticket, enough?
    Thank you

Given that you are specificially advised NOT to buy a ticket until you have the visa I doubt if they will take the slightest notice of it

Heh - I hadn't even thought of that...I think I was thinking of all those Border Patrol shows and whatnot where they ask passengers for documentation of their return flight...not even thinking a visa interview would be way before.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

It says 'please type or print your answers' which would imply that yes, you can hand write it...or if you have a typewriter you could use that.

I thought my friend would be ok (ESTA online and done) and it was a minor offence and long time ago. Then after reading further into this, I find its better to get a visa for him then to be deported when he arrives to the country, which may affect him in the long run. Everyone makes mistakes. IF only the the US change the part arrested to convictions, etc and problem solved. What i don't understand is the in the US like many other places have high levels of shooting , drugs, etc but someone who made a mistake at a young age (minor offence) has to go through a long process just to find out if he can visit a country and all the cost involved in doing so...makes you wonder if its worth visiting that place

Aware of that . More sense if the wrote, 'please type or write your answers'

Every person who goes to the US is deemed to be an immigrant, and its up to them to prove otherwise. Its the way it is. Most of the things asked of BigSaver's friend is what you may be asked in secondary anyways - proof of ties, finances etc.
End of the day one or two guys at CBP can refuse you because they don't like the look of your face not matter what documentation you bring. Very unlikely to happen but even so.
Most travellers would not even consider taking such documentation with them anyways.

If my friend has his visa...it should be all fine. why should they send him back after everything has been checked, etc

IMO hes got no problems. He fits in the "juvenile exceptions" category. Its just a process he's got to go through. In some circumstances Canada is worse.

When I had to get a residence permit to live in France (many moons ago) it was a heck of a lot harder, documents tranlated and signed by such and such official, documents requested that were never used etc etc.

With a British passport , you can live in any EU country? or I am wrong?

Not sure, that is probably something to look up from an official source before going forward with anything.

It's an American form - they don't say 'or write' - they say 'or print'...so...
