Up until now I have had insurance provided through the mortgage lender, mainly because it was a stipulation to get the mortgage i wanted (what i saved in the mortgage i spent on the insurance, £370) but like most of the messages above, i followed Martins advice, went through both search sites and since my house is a simple, no previous claims, good security etc, i ended up going with the first one quoted on the insuresupermarket site, Halifax, who provided a final quote of £156 after much fiddling with the options. This was after spending quite a while on Confused who provided a cheapest quote of £232 from Zurich for the same cover. Basicaly i think if yours is a simple quote then insuresupermarket is possibly for you, whereas if you have a complicated quote to get, go with confused since it asked lots more questions and makes the quote more specific to your situation.
Anyway, i ramble, once again thanks MArtin for a point in the right direction.

I am currently trying to get some cheaper quotes on all of our insurance policies, however apparantly if you live in a flat you can't get quotes online?!?
Why is this?
It's a pain in the A$$ if I have to phone everyone just to get some figures! It would be so much easier to do it online.Dream of being mortgage free....

Anyone taking out a home insurance with Zurich: you can currently get a whopping £90 cashback by signing up via TopCashBack.
Rpoints also have a cashback offer for Zurich but it's only £45. Both TopCashBack and Rpoints also have cashback deals for other insurance companies, none of them presently as much as Zurich, but it's worth checking out whether you can get a cashback deal.
There are probably other cashback sites offering similar, but I found TopCashBack, Rpoints and Quidco generally pay out the highest amounts. Quidco, for some reason, doesn't appear to have insurance deals, though.
To get the cashback, you must sign up starting from the cashback site, and be prepared to wait 2-3 months for your money. Also monitor that the cashback site tracks your purchase properly - and read the cashback site T&Cs so you know how they operate.0 -
I just had a frustrated couple of months trying to buy home insurance from Halifax. After following Martin's excellent trail to one of the search engines I got a good deal online with Halifax who promised to send me everything in the post.
A week later nothing, one phone call later and we're back on track. Some more weeks pass by still nothing.
This time the operator tells me they won't send me anything until I hand over my bank details. However, by bank requires mandates have a signature (old fashioned I know) and as they tell me I now have a policy with them, I asked could they send me the joining booklet so I know what I'm signing for, OK they said.
It is now after Xmas and I've had to call up again. They want my money but will not send anything to show for it. I'm concerned that my details are on their system for a policy I've only read on the internet! So I bit my tongue and cancelled.
Unfortunately, I don't recognise (therefore don't trust) the other cheaper quotes until I get to my current provider, so I'm no better off!0 -
Just used the recommended Insuresupermarket

to find the best quote for a new house Im moving into.
Zurich came up £70 cheaper than the next nearest for buildings and contents and then found I could get £45 cashback with Greasypalm and Rpoints. Had to check it twice.....£45!!!!!! This resulted in the price, net of cashback, being £115 cheaper than the next nearest quote and a 42% saving. WOW.

I must be one of the few who so far has found Halifax to be the worst deal. AA, my current home insurers are offering to renew for £350.82. Barclays comes up about £45 cheaper at £304.99. Halifax? £377.43 with a higher excess! Hmm. I'll try Zurich next and then thats it.The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.0

Wow, Zurich has come up cheapest for me by far. £100 cheaper than my AA renewal quote and £50 cheaper than my Halifax quote. PLUS cashback from greasypalm? Now that's a deal. I've compared the policies carefully and the only difference I can see is the rebuild sum assured - £250k for Zurich whereas for AA it is unlimited. Includes everything else - legal cover, home emergency, accidental damage, etc.The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.0

I had an excellent service from Chase Templeton. the quote was miles cheaper than any other quotes I'd had, and was the least trouble and best service I received in the whole first-time-buy experience.0

Just received my renewal quote for Buildings and Contents insurance from Norwich Union Direct for £349. This included my no claims discount of 5 years. Decided I would check out the quote on the NUDIRECT website and got a price of £244 for the same cover. (There is a promotional offer on their web site that gives you 2 years half price contents insurance , as long as you dont claim in year 1). Rang NU Direct and asked them if I could get this offer on my renewal. They obliged and I am £100 better off after just 1 phone call.
