i've bought a couple of the battery operated nit combs now, both different brands, and when used my kids says it hurts them and gives them an electric shock, i've tried it and i can feel a little zap but nothing extreme, is it just that my kids are weird ??? :-/ :-XNobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

I can recommend a 'natural' based shampoo remedy called Kincare (by Moraz) purchased at chemist. About £7 a bottle but does several washes as a normal shampoo would. Leave on 15 mins then rinse out and do the usual comb through. For this I definitely recommend the nitfree comb. It's £10.99 but it's a brilliant design for getting out the nits as well as the lice - it sort of shreds them because the tines are like little spirals. You can buy it on the internet at https://www.nittygritty.co.uk
Repeat the whole process 3 days later. Has worked infallibly on my two.
Would not use organophosphates on children (or myself for that matter).Waddle you do eh?0 -
TEA TREE.... I swear by the stuff, even if you buy cheapo shampoo and conditioner, put a few drops of tea tree essential oil in the bottle, give it a good shake and use as normal.
you can also put a few drops on the kids brushes, and also a few drops in the bath... invaluable stuff... fixes most things.....
I do find the australian bodycare range is rather good....

Not nice I know but I have started using an "electronic zapper" comb ( cost around £20 from boots) which seems to be keeping the blighters at bay.
I wasn't keen on plastering my little girl with the chemicals too much, and the chemist said tea tree oil was an irritant.
When I first found the eggs used a cheap comb and olive oil which took around an hour !!
Next used chemicals but they came back within a month (at a cost of £10)
Use this comb each month and have had no probs (although still going round the class )
The electronic comb isn't on the shelves - you need to ask for them.
Death to the nits (would be nice if we could have a national nit killing day !)0 -
Argos also sell nit combs, they have 2 electronic ones for £14.99, which seems pretty good value if it works, certainly more cost effective than chemicals.
Recenlty I read a report about a new treatment for head lice, yet to be launched. It's asilicone based gel, which you plaster over the scalp, and the lice suffocate. It's kind to heads, as it doesn't contain chemicals and isn't absorbed through the tissue. Don't know if it kills eggs thouhg, but it's worth checking in the future to see if there are any up to date treatments.
Incidentally, I used an electronic nit comb several years ago, and I found that after a while it began to get bunged up, though I cleaned it after every use. But oils from the hair seemed to cling and it just didn't zap any more.
I now use a double layered metal comb which Morrisons (so I guess other supermarkets do too) for around £3. When lice are detected, I use it daily, morning and night on freshly brushed, but not washed, hair. It's fantastic, it catches lice at all stages, and removes eggs too. After about 2 weeks regular use, we don't see the blighters any more.
I read a report a few years ago, by a specialist (can't remember the title, too long and complicated). She basically suggested that wet combing, i.e wash, condition, comb; was not the best method, as many lice were missed due to the conditioner, but you left behind a perfect environment for breeding.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
My kids wont entertain the electronic ones. they say it electrocutes them
I tend to do the slapping on of loads of conditioner and combing the little sods out, works to some extent but they always come home with em again nest day
My youngest is scratching again at the mo, just been trying to go through her head while she's sleeping, but its disturbing her and she keeps waking up, she's not settling tho and i feel awful for her, i'll go through her head again with a fine toothed comb in the morning. but i'm sick to the ruddy back teeth of em now, i've never known anything like this before, ya just cant get rid of em for long, its driving me insane  :mad:Nobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

I got one of these bugbusting kits http://www.chc.org/products_kit.cfm.
Kids hated the electronic comb.
I use the small combs with tea tree oil conditioner and I haven't had any nots n the house for over a year now.
I also douse them both with T-Tree oil every morning before school. Doesn't seem to irritate either of them tho'.Noli nothis permittere te terere
