Olive oil works brilliantly, it smothers the little sods and they keel over. Don't forget to do a good comb through to get rid of the bodies !.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Have u tried Hedrin? Doesn't work in same way as normal nit lotions but by smothering the little beggars. I don't know however if olive oil works the same way. I would say however that u need to do it more than once a week with the comb though, when my DS got them I used to do his hair every 2nd day so u were catching them as they hatched.
Off to scratch my head for an hour now, just talking about them...

You know, i actually offered to go and check the kid's heads for nowt at my daughter's old school beacause i was so sick of getting rid of them, and then coming back a week later (my daughter was also getting blamed for it coz i was a punk  )...they said that they couldn't because it would be classed as assault:mad:

does not matter what you try you will never get rid of them totaly. All you will do is keep them at bay. They will only ever disapear when the other carrier has got rid of them....
My partner could not believe that some people actualy keep there kids off school in scotland if they have nits...
Mind you after a while i could understand , as her daughter would have been off school half her life...0 -
For goodness sake, there is no one single culprit in the class or at school. Who might infect the kids one day might get themselves infect the week after. Its absolutely nonsense when people say "Oh, its this one person"...thats not helping the problem is it?
If you are having trouble getting rid of them so are other people and its no one person to blame for this very rife problem.
Get yourself some tea tree shampoo and conditioner, the cheapest from Tesco or whereever is fine, and also get yourself some tea tree essential oil.
Wash the kids hair condition and rinse with warm water with a couple of drops of tea tree oil in it and comb through.
There is nothing else you need to do because if you do this regularly, they will go within a couple of weeks as you are breaking the cycle.
Yes, they might get infected again, thats just the way it is, but don't forget, all you need to do is miss just one off your kids hair and your kids can pass that on. It doesn't mean you and your family are "ignoring the problem".
They are very hard to get rid of at the moment because of their resistence to chemicals. Hard to get rid of for everyone.0 -

why is it that in some schools or localities it is more prolific/frequent than other schools.
There is a reason....
Some people just do not bother....when a letter comes round from school that there is a problem, if everyone keeps on top of it it is gone in a month or so...
Some area's/schools its a constant problem week after week. Some children are constantly infected.0 -
You really have to do the conditioner & comb treatment every night for 2 weeks when their is an infestation. I would then go through every other night for a couple of weeks & only then once a week. Tea tree oil is also meant to help stop infestation.
I don't agree with fine hair being what they like, I have long thick hair & every time one of my children got them I would too, while my sons have similar hair types while one would often get infested the other one only picked up occasional ones.
Apparently once boys reach 12 they are less likely to get infested due to testosterone & drying hair with a hair dryer & using straighteners are also recommended.0 -
OMG I am sat scratching my head like you wouldn't believe just reading this thread!!! :rotfl: ARGH!!!!
I hasten to add I haven't had nitts since I was very very young (9 I think was the last time I had them so 20 years ago!) and I vividly remember who in my class had themKids being kids though we still played with them because you do when you're a kid... my grandmother who I lived with at the time had the unenviable task of combing my hair with conditioner - no find when you have a squirmy 9 year old with waist long hair I'm sure LOL
I stopped getting nits when I moved schools... honestly never had one sinceI have no doubt my daughter will get them in time but I will be going the Olive Oil route I think

When i informed the school about DD1 having caught nits from school they were adamant that she be kept off school until she was clear of them despite the fact i had spent 3 hours the night before conditioning and combing through her hair
I have had this problem with both my DD's (aged 3 & 4) for just over a year now touch wood they havent had any for at least the last month now. They seem to attract them like there is no tomorrow.
I have tried every lotion and potion there is going, the nitty gritty bit comb, the electronic not combs you name it i have tried it and the only thing i have found that gets rid of them is conditioning and combing. I was having to do it every day to keep on top of them though
Its a nightmare and you have my fullest sympathies.
I actually had one 'friend' who constantly left her daughter at my house over the summer holidays, this friend was adamant that it was my girls that were giving her daughter nits. Funnily enough though as soon as i stopped having anything to do with this 'friend' the problem with nits stopped too :mad:0
