Oooohhh you really are Newbie!!!!! Regardless of what you do, change to one that pays decent interest - try www.moneysupermarket.co.uk to check, I bet you're getting about 0.5%.

When I opened my Smile account I got more interest in 2 weeks than I had over the whole of the previous year with Lloyds - was quick to tell them this when they asked why I closing account!

Smile not the highest payer but pays reasonably good interest, is internet account and can be operated via Post Offices - so you can do your bit for the community as well. I ahve 2 current accounts with them & you can transfer money instantly between them - sounds like you'd find this useful!

I was also able recently to open a further current account with Lloyds - promise of £50, but in end decided £50 not worth the hassle (sorry money savers........), so as long as credit record OK should be able to open at least another 1 or 2.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

just moved into our 1st home, myself and my partner currently have a basic current account which was setup when we was both around 16yrs old, we haven't changed them from then till now (as far as I am aware) what we want to do is open a joint current account or something, and basically have that for our house, basically pay in a certain amount of money every month from our separate accounts (say £500 each), then for the mortgage/bills to come out the new account.

    am i making sense?

This is exactly what me & Mr RB do. We have 1 joint account with the halifax and an account each with the halifax. On payday, we both pay our bills contributions into the joint account and all the bills come out of the joint account. As the joint a/c & our own a/cs are with the same bank and we both transfer the money online, its immediate.

What's left in my account after payday is my own. We've been doing this for 6 months now (after 10 years of just 1 joint a/c) and we both seem to have more money! Bizarre

We also have a second joint account with a different bank that was going to be our bills account but we didn't get organised - we just use that to save bits for car tax & MOT.

LloydsTSB said I can open as many current accounts as I want (within reason) and no credit checks, I have two current accounts and two savings accounts (seems you can open as many savings accounts as you want online anyway).

    as above...!

    thanks in advance.

I have several current accounts, some of them don't show up on my credit file even with overdraft facilities. I opened some of these a number of years ago when you could walk into a bank with a pound and that was all you needed to open an account. Its a little harder these days.

I'm trying to get hubby to change to the A&L account but he won't move from HSBC. We have been with this account since the year dot and he seems to think this counts for alot when applying for morgages/loans etc.
Does moving banks affect your credit score? Couldn't we open the A&L and keep the HSBC? If we did this would we still be able to say on forms when they ask how long you have been with your bank X no of years with the HSBC?.

    Hughesey:

If you wanted to open an Alliance & Leicester joint account you wouldn't necessarily have to move your HSBC or your partner's Halifax account if you're happy with the a/c you have. I know you can get more interest with A&L and Lloyds but I have got my NatWest account and although the interest isn't great (apart from the studenty 0% o/d - deficit banking really works) their customer services are fantastic and I wouldn't want either A&L's hi-pressure sales tactics or Lloyds' foreign contact centres.

Anyway, I digress. You can keep your HSBC Single account and your partner her Halifax account. You could open a joint account wherever the hell you please (provided you meet criteria), agree to £500pm funding each or whatever, then set up a standing order from your HSBC account into the new joint account and have your partner do the same. For example if you get paid on the 1st of every month, set up a standing order (automated monthly payment between bank accounts) to leave on the 5th (I'd recommend leaving a few days in case payroll balls it all up).

Anyway the gist of this stupidly long post is thus:

Your joint a/c can be held somewhere different to your single accounts.

    Hi,
We have between us ;1 current account each(co op and hsbc) , 1 joint current account for bills(hsbc), 1 current acc for hols ( nationwide), 1 savings for tax man(co op) , 1 savings for hols( hsbc regular at 8%) , 1 isa , saving for wedding ( first direct),
1 royal bank of scotland( large overdraft and switch) for emergencys.

This may sound unneccesary and overly complicated but it works great. All houshold bills are paid from bill acc. we pay £30 each a month in the holiday account which is not missed at all , but when hol time is here we have£720 which is a great start.
As I am self employed 20% of what I earn goes in tax account so no more worrying when tax bill arrives and any change after paying the tax man is going towards me a new van in a year or so .

I wish I would have done this years ago.

In reply to Joto, my GF will not move from HSBC as she has been with them years. I moaned at her to change but she wouldn`t. A few months ago we needed to borrow 25k ( house purchase) and egg, alliance and leicster turned us down. She applied to HSBC who gave us the money . I am so so pleased that she didn`t listern to me .

On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.
  • I have 3 current accounts with 3 different banks. Only one of these is a student account (Lloyds TSB). Nationwide debit card for travelling + esavings, and NPBS for usage of linked savings account. Each one comes with a visa debit card + 100 cheque guarantee! I don't even have a job, and i've never claimed any different on any application form either! If obtaining multiple credit cards is as easy as opening current accounts no wonder some people find themselves in a financial mess!
