No single answer as it depends on alot of contributing factors, eg: time with bank (if any), required paying-in salary, credit status ...etc.

Some people can have none, some people can have basic bank accounts and some can have full current accounts.

I have 2 current accounts myself ... one full and one basic.

In theory there's no limit but all applications are at the discretion of the account providers.

Credit searches may lead a provider to query why you need another account?
If you are asked on an application form 'do you have any other accounts' your choices are either to lie (which would cloud your relationship with the bank/b.soc before you start) or to tell the truth and you may be asked to justify why you need another account.
If the account is not used, don't be surprised to find the bank/b.soc either asking you to close it or closing it unilaterally.
How many accounts do you think you need?

This has become a tricky area for me. Couldn't resist the A&L offer so both myself and my husband opened new current accounts with A&L to get the £50 each opening bonus. However, as we both have Nationwide Flex accounts that we are very happy with, its proving a hassle keeping up the commitment to A&L (min £500 per month). If I was asked to justify why I have these accounts, I would struggle to explain as I really did not need another one. Still waiting for A&L to credit me with the £50 and then will close this account. Anyone else opened this account and how long did it take to get the £50 bonus?
  • what it is...

just moved into our 1st home, myself and my partner currently have a basic current account which was setup when we was both around 16yrs old, we haven't changed them from then till now (as far as I am aware) what we want to do is open a joint current account or something, and basically have that for our house, basically pay in a certain amount of money every month from our separate accounts (say £500 each), then for the mortgage/bills to come out the new account.

    am i making sense?

Yes, that's quite a realistic idea and one I've seen on many occasions. If I'm write you're talking of three accounts (yours, hers & a joint one)? Let's you have some independence of finances and helps with budgeting as well.

Now as to where to open them is another story........

  • exactly that...

we have our wages paid into our own separate current accounts (as it already is), then set up a new joint one, then get mortgage/bills... coming out of that, then we get to spend our own money then on what we want!!

cuz at the minute, i have all the "big" bills coming out of mine £616 mortage, £85 council tax.... - she has all the little un's - phone bill, gas/elec... - i want to make it a bit more fair.... reckon we'd save more.

any help much appreciated then if anyone can think of a bank that can do this for us...!!!!!!
  • When Mr Sunshine moved into my house his current a/c and mortgage were with Nationwide, mine were with Abbey and Halifax

He said he'd had no probs with Nationwide, so we opened a joint a/c and I an a/c in my name to do the exact thing you want to do. This was 7 years ago and they were fab, made even easier when they introduced online banking ;)

I opened an HSBC current account in May this year purely to take advantage of their Monthly Saver 8% offer.
I transfer £250 out of my FD current account per month via Online Banking which arrives instantaneously because they are part of same group (the maximum monthly payment allowed into the Monthly Saver.)
I have not yet been asked to pay in a higher amount or have a wage paid in.
This is the 5th current account I've opened in the last 5 years.

I have 4 all with the same bank and hubby has another 1. (3 joint, 1 mine, 1 his) - does this make sense?

joint ac are: House ac for all bills; Living ac - this gets our joint monthly spends; holiday ac - obvious. So basically out current ac are both nil for most of the month. We have a joint living ac, as he gets paid vastly more than me and this is so we have equal spending money.
  • Don't think there is a limit as long as you pass the credit check.

I've got 2 current accounts. Halifax Extras is my main one and I have a Nationwide Flex Account for when I go abroad!!!
