    Or Linux OS?

The software I have quoted in my article are Windows compatible software.

With LINUX OS, you could try using WINE (windows emulator) to try and run the programs in linux. You may have luck!

With MAC, Virtual PC would most probarbly run the software and be your best bet.

As per seperate specific software I am unaware of, but just buy a cheap £100 pc, set up a network so both computers on the net, and install ur voip software on the pc. Sorted.

    Hope thats ok

Hi there can I just point out if you are staying in halls to check the conditions of the internet access as some providers ban the use of VOIP, filesharing and webcams due to the high bandwidth usage.

or if they dont ban it...they can certainly de-prioritise traffic so the quality may fall...it doesnt cost anything to find out tho so no harm really!
  • what sort of microphone/ headset do you need for this to work?
an you just plug a mic into the sound card?
  • First of all, the VOIP does not take up a lot of bandwidth at all!!! You can run it while doing anything, (gaming, downloading) etc, and the worst you'll see is a tiny lag at your end. It uses very small bandwidth so that shouldnt be a major problem as I can see! I will tell you in a month though when im using it from a halls.

As for microphone headset, you can use ANY headset with a microphone or if you really want any microphone with speakers though the sound will include all background noise from your room and a not nice echo most probarbly.

It autmatically uses your PRIMARY sound and recording playback devices so should all be fine :)

Would this work if the user / computer was abroad?
My baby sister is going to teach English in China for 6 months next week; she will have access to a computer and broadband provided in her flat. Is it worth her setting this up so she can ring us back in England on landlines for free / cheap? I know she's worried that it's going to be very expensive to ring home.
Doesn't matter so much about us ringing her as long as she can ring us.
  • This is why I recommend this software..

It is completely free. If you install the voip software you can ring any landline in the WORLD for free (as long as u uploaded 1 euro to ur account)...

If she does it then its the same for her :)

  • Hiya,
I tried to install the incoming calls programme x-lite and it says that it coming soon. Is the programme available elsewhere online, or just the one place?

    Thanks

Sorry to be a nerd (I'm getting old - my only excuse!!) My daughter is going to uni and I thought this would be great. BUT..... (apologies!!!) does this mean she will talk through the pc mike? or do i still need to buy a phone??? She probably could answer this but I don't want to look like a typical 'old women' and ask her!!! Thank you

she can talk via a microphone, or you can get headsets with Mic's or there are USB Voip phones.....but if you have a microphone already then that's cheapest :)
