Free phone calls! Contact family/friends, let them contact you!

This post uses information from myself, with also information taken from Phonix who posted as a reply to one of mine so thanks to him.

With the use of a couple of programs there are some great VOIP things that allows students (including myself) amazing options phone wise.

While living in hall of residence there are many arguments over phone bills. A way of stopping this, is use your own private phone on your computer for free!

First of all, you can get your OWN local landline number for your computer!!!! This can be found at http://www.sipgate.com . On there is instructions of how to set up your account, and download the program X-Lite to let people make calls to your pc using a landline number at Local rate charges! Just like any normal landline.

So that sorts out incoming. But what about outgoing? Do you want to contact your family/friends free of charge? Now you can using:

Just download the program, create an account, and you can make free calls to ALL landlines in the UK (make sure you dial 0044113 rather than 0113 for example).

Initially calls will only last 1 minutes long and then be cut off. However, you can pay ONE euro using paypal or visa card to get infinitely long free calls to landline numbers. I know this because I HAVE DONE IT, so it isn't a con and as long as you don't call mobiles that ONE euro will stay in your account and you will be able to call landlines for free for as long as you want.

For you, ALL this is free, or the equivalent of 66p rather. It means peopel can call you direct on a local number, and you can call landlines of family friends completely free of charge.

Due to this there is NO need to use phone lines equipped in student accomadation, thus you can make it clear you are not paying towards phone bill as you haven't touched it.

Hey, thanks for this post.

Have tried the outgoing calls (using voipbuster) and can say it really works. I haven't paid 1 euro yet because I thought I would test the quality and it was great.

I will definately be using this in the future. Saves me paying anything to call home from uni.

No problem I paid the Euro too It's brilliant! Quality doesn't fail!!! Worth more than 66p but i aitn complaining :P

if i set up a number on one computer, can i then change over to another computer and use the same number?

Yes you can All you have to do is configure X-Lite using the same user details!!!

Instructions are all on the site on how to set it up

You can configure it for both.

Go to menu -> System settings -> SIP Proxy.

Set up one as default and the other as proxy one.
