No doubt HMRC are using anti-terrorist legislation to find the IP addresses of every on this board so they can investigate them...
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

I think Nick has a point...........

Having recently attended an ICAEW Conference I was flabbergasted by the first speaker and her view point v facts.

When challenged on Revenue targets and over zealous inspectors she stated that this was "the unintended consequence of Targets".

So bringing in a Target driven pay and promotion scheme for IOT's is not too encourage them to collect more tax.

    Now who's kidding whom?
  • Hi Nick
The site design is truly awful, something which is bound to lead to questions about its credibility. And that's a shame because there's a heap of useful stuff there.

and Fengirl: perhaps you could find a couple of minutes to produce one example of each of your three criticisms ("half truths, unsubstantiated statements and downright lies"), just to lend a little credibility to your damning comments. General comments are, as you are no doubt aware, no use to anyone.

    Best wishes, Neil
  • I think the best bit about the website is wondering how long it will take HMSO to register the breach of Crown Copyright in the top right hand corner...

And my personal view on the whole thing is 'the man does protest too much'!
  • Nick,

You mention on your site your intention to pdf the whole file and post it on your site. How about starting with some of the correspondence that is referred to in the schedule of events and the recorded conversations? For example, in the 22 Feb 07 phone call with J Lamper, she refers to her letter of 10 January (2007?) and the one she sent before that. Let's see them!
  • Firstly, I quite enjoyed reading this rant. However, Nick you have asked that any inaccuracies are pointed out to you, so I thought I'd give you some to think about.

I have never, in 14 years recieved a bonus for collecting extra tax.

I am not, and have never been paid to lie. In fact, I know several cases where someone has been dismissed for doing so

I always use my full name, and give my email address and phone numbers to anyone I deal with

My expenses are inspected regularly and thoroughly, with me having to justify every penny

To be even handed - I agree that a large number of staff are not happy. This is because the press paints us to be overpaid, lazy, useless, data losing nerds. A lot of staff live well below the average wage, and we all get blamed every time something goes a little bit awry.

A lot of staff live well below the average wage, and we all get blamed every time something we have no control over goes a little bit awry, even though most of us do a very good job, for little thanks and less reward.

I can totally understand the rant - I've done it myself in the past, but please don't tar us all with the same brush - it's like saying all journalists are drunk hacks who would sell their gran for a good story.
  • Further to my last post about posting PDFs of correspondence, Nick, how about posting all correspondence in which the Beckham book is mentioned?
  • I have only had a quick look and I am not a professional with tax or accounting issues but those that are assume that the public know the laws when they do not or when they do they mix them all up. For instance it is common advice to give your non working spouse assests in order to use their allowances. Other times giving assests away is wrong and will get you into trouble. Most of us pay and reley on accountants to sort out our affairs.
