Hi,
There's a story in the Sunday Times today about a journo who is currently subject to an HMRC enquiry. He has set up a website and blog to share with others at:

Hope this of use.

If you've read it (or tried to ... as the website is about as stable as the journalist) ........ you'd realise it's not of much use? 90% journalistic licence with the odd fact thrown in to confuse. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi Mikeyorks.
Tell me, do you work for HMRC by any chance? If there are factual mistakes let me know and I'll correct them. Nick https://www.tax-hell.co.uk0 -
This site is just so full of half truths, unsubstantiated statements and downright lies that its impossible to know where to begin. I dont know if I even want to waste my time doing so - its a pity that most people will read this rubbish and believe it.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Having been through a recent tax investigation myself I can whole heartedly confirm that this web site- tax-hell.co.uk DOES provide an accurate description of the hellish process. The system is not transparent, your accountant does not have the same rule book as HMRC, or if they do they don't pass this information on to clients. So if your accountant alows certain expenses, be prepared for them to change their tune in the event of an enquiry, putting you the client in the wrong and liable for back tax, and interest and penalties!0

Sorry, fengirl, but I have to disagree. The site is very good and offers some obvious truths which could assist anyone in this investigation situation in the future. The idea about taping the interview is excellent, as HMRC merely uses notes which may or may not be a truthful account.

What an awful website. Slow & ponderous, terrible layout; a real pain to use. The content is poor as well; for instance relying on the Daily Mail as a source confirming HMRC staff are on commission!
It states: "HMRC has double standards. Yes, it’s one rule for you and another for them." and then goes on to say that "When you are investigated they want to see every taxi receipt and train ticket you have claimed as an expense. However in the unlikely event they (a celebrity, a Royal or MP) is the subject of an investigation HMRC will accept their word about expenses!" So the HMRC staff are are MPs, celebrities and royalty, are they? Civil servants actually have very strict expenses rules, far stricter than you're likely to find in private industry."
It looks like something thought up by a tabloid, it's not a fair article on the workings of the tax system.0 -
Gone to the site and am listening to the phone call...
Illuminating stuff.
Edited to add, have had a google and found an article online

I don't know if the information in the site is any good.
The site itself is so poor that I hit the back button.
as somebody who baits the revenue for work / pleasure
its all a game and the winner takes all
you just need to know where the rules can be bent
and yes, the Tinkerer at the Treasury who now has the top job makes tax complicated to hide the fact that he is thick.Counting the beans : £1
Knowing which beans to count : £990 -
