  • Hi everyone :)

Just picked up a joint of beef Brisket instead of the usual topside of beef by accident and I haven't got a clue how best to cook it!

I'm probably fussing other nothing but it's for my dads birthdays at the weekend and I don't want to mess it up!

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Brisket needs to be cooked slowly - can be dry, so best cooked in liquid as a pot roast.....like this:

Definitely cook it slowly either covered in the oven, on the hob or a slow cooker. Cooked properly it is a really tasty joint of beef.

This thread should help with more recipes and ideas:

what can I do with Brisket?

What would you do with Beef Brisket in a slow cooker?

I'll add your post to the first link later.

Hi, I love this cut of beef, had it on Sunday and leftovers on Monday and Wednesday. What I do is seal it in a pan then having pre-heated my slow cooker pop it in, make some gravy, pour over and cook low and slow. I needed early lunch on Sunday so put it in over night on low. I also put in some baby carrots which were delish. It can be quite fatty so I usually take it out of the gravy a few hours before serving and let the gravy rest too so it is easier to skim the fat off the top and to carve the meat. It is well worth it though for the flavour of the meat and gravy. I used some of the leftovers on Monday shredded with barbecue sauce stir fried with mushrooms and leafy greens served with rice, also very nice.
    Hope that helps

I had never cooked brisket of beef before I saw Jamies moneysaving meals where he cooked brisket of beef so I gave it a go-absolutely delicious and the beef does not dry out during the cooking.

I too would go with the slow cooker way.Brisket has a flavour all of its own and the strained off dripping makes gorgeous stock and the fat on top makes delicious roast potato's

Oooo I love a bit of brisket.

I pot roast it - chunky veg (onion, carrot, celery, garlic), beef oxo and half fill with hot water. Lidded pot then cook on low for as long as possible (at least 2-3 hours in the oven) - top up the water if it looks like drying out.

Take the meat out, add a spoon of flour, then mash the veg and top up with more water. Strain and you have an amazing gravy to serve alongside.

    Hi
I always cook brisket in beer with onion & celery & herbs.
Definately not dry and the stock makes delicious gravy.
I also tend to cook a larger joint as the leftovers are delicious.

My butcher doesn't do brisket. I know, don't ask. He says he does the next piece up from that. I think it was called LMC. Anyway, I used to get a small piece for 3 and stopped buying it from him when the last piece I bought over a year ago cost me £11.50:huh: Then there was the cost of cooking it to add to the equation so it wasn't turning in to a reasonable priced meal.

Was in M&S food hall before xmas (not been in there for years) and noticed that they had beef brisket for 2 I think it was but could have easily stretched it to 3 for £5. It came with a packet of gravy. Bought for our boxing day lunch and was delicious. Only took 40 mins to cook. Its now back to £6.39 but as this is about what I pay in Morrisons for a piece of brisket, I'm inclined to get it again.
I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.
