At the moment, it's not possible to transfer your BT number to VoIP.

The Cordless VoIP phones are meant to have many problems, and are not as good as an ATA with a standard DECT cordless phone. However as you point out with a wireless VoIP phone you could use it where you find wireless access points, the problem there is the high charges the providers of the wireless access points charge, as they charge you for use of their network, though I believe there are some free ones around and maybe more free ones in the future, so if you can get free calls using VoIP and free use of an access point, you therefore get completely free calls whilst mobile.

There are many homes who have wireless routers and don't have them secured, so you could log on to their service and use their broadband to make the calls, however I think the UK has made it illegal to do this, not that that stops some people and what are the chances of being found out? Not that I am suggesting people should go out and do this.

I have 7 cordless phones in the house connected to 2 PAP2 ATA's but I would be interested in a link to the cordless VOIP you mention.

Damn you bex i fought for 4 years to become nerdless and in a few posts you have set me back years :-)
so although you havent got it to work yet theoretically i can keep my sky extra box in spain
i see a post about a lot of these companies being all part of the same group is that the case with sipgate and sipdiscount

i have a sipgate number now for incoming calls
i take it as you have sipdiscount as well that they are cheaper for outgoing calls ?
i see someone moaning about broadband buyer and the rg11 adaptors without capacitors, i see on their site that that are now recommending adaprots with capacitors is that an ad error or have they corrected the problem i dont want to buy something advertised with a capacitor that doesnt really have 1 ?

as i only started wireless networking 2 weeks ago i am still looking into the best security methods
i have currently locked it to the mac's (nearly said "mac code" ) but had a few problems with other security measures and i am now waiting until i fully understand it before i start playing with it again as i have just bought my girlfriend a lap top and any loss of service really annoys her :-) she is being very quiet at the moment and i can sit on here and become a nerd again :-)
cant get my pc to talk to the laptop via wireless even though they are in the same workgroup and i set it up using the xp network wizard

They sell two types one without capacitors and ones with.

I purchased ones with, though when I can get around to it, I just plan to butcher an RJ11 cable and connect it to the A/B terminals of a master socket, just as if it was a BT/Cable phone line entering the property.

Most phones don't require the ring capacitor and will happily function on the two-wire standard as they have this built into the phone, however some BT branded ones and maybe others only produced for the UK may not ring as they don't have these in the phone, as they expect there to be the ring capacitor there (in the master socket).

The adaptors I have do ring two BT branded phones I have, whether they already have the ring capacitor built in I don't know, have not tried wiring it up yet without.

Yes I have SIP Discount as at the moment they are offering completely free calls to the UK and other destinations, whereas Sipgate charges. I will keep Sipgate as I don't want to keep changing incoming numbers, Sipgate also allow use of freephone numbers for free.

Thanks for the link. I have just had a quick look. Pricey at £150, you can do the same for £35 (PAP2 £20 and Cordless £15).

Sipdiscount are CURRENTLY free to UK landlines whereas Sipgate charge about 1p/min. People have Sipgate accounts primarily for the incoming geographic number they provide FOC.

I'm jealous to death of your move to Spain, whereabouts and will it be free stop overs for MSE's;) ?

i am new to voip but i think with the help of bextech i understand it now but feel free to correct me if i am wrong

you are not entirely correct in saying that you can do the same thing for £35

with the wireless cordless you get the ability to use wifi areas in stations airports and hotels or if you are so inclinded you can walk down the road and wait to get a signal from all of the people that bought wireless but either dont know how to or cant be bothered to set up wireless security

i will be moving to the murcia area of spain

if you look anything like your avatar i could lose my testicles for just talking to you on here and my girlfriend will be guarding the airport just in case you turn up :-)

As BexTech states the cost of WiFi access though is normally much higher than a normal mobile call. Currently I pay a fixed 3p per call from my mobile to landlines at anytime. A 1 hour call with WiFi would be about £3 compared with 3p using Orange & 1899.com. I only have a further 13 months free freephone access with Orange so hopefully there will be lots of free WiFi access points by then.

Noticed last night that Ryanair are doing 'free' flights to Murcia. See you soon .

i am an orange contract phone user but have not used 1899 mainly because i use the phone all of the time for business and cant be bothered with the hassle of not being able to just pick a number from the phone book and dial it
why did you say you have 13 months of freephone left ?? where does the 13 months come from ??
