Can someone please confirm that you can definitely use Sipgate with a simple headset connected to your PC.
If you look on the Sipgate site under "requirements" it says you need "An Internet-Telephone (SIP-Standard)":
"Sipgate can be used with every SIP compatible Internet telephone. In order to use sipgate at a private DSL or cable system connection, your phone must support the STUN protocol. At present such SIP- and STUN compatible telephones are difficult to find in the UK." It then goes on to recommend that you visit their shop (what a surprise) !!
Obviously with a SIP phone you have the advantage that you can use it as a "standalone" without having to boot up your PC but I think £50 - £60 for a new phone or adaptor is a bit much to pay for the privilege (especially when you have the benefit of voicemail).
Clearly, they are looking to make money from selling their phones, but when you read through the site it seems to imply that you can ONLY use the service with a SIP phone which is definitely misleading if that is not the case:
"As a sipgate user, you call with a normal looking telephone that is plugged into a broadband/DSL connection."
"Impractical headsets.....are a thing of the past!"
I know that there are references to using headsets earlier in this thread, but I was wondering if something had changed and that it was no longer possible.
Can someone please advise.0 -
It's still possible, just as they say not really practical.
If you don't mind having your PC switched on to use the service then what you wish to do is fine. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
I am still unable to hear the person when i call them. This happens when i use x-lite and i can recieve call fine
If i close x-lite down and call directly through voipbuster i can hear the person i am calling....anyone????0 -
OK, I've created a Sipgate account and been assigned a number which has been confirmed via email. However, when I logon to my account the phone number which is showing is different by one digit. This is the same on the front page "business card" and in the "my account" section under "connection information".
My SIP ID and SIP-address do agree with my "assigned number" (ie without the area code). If I try to "change telephone number" it justs takes me back to the registration page (ie presumably to set up a new number).
Presumably the phone number you provide when signing up (ie under personal information) is just a contact number and has no bearing on anything "technical".
Can someone please confirm what the different numbers mean and whether this is normal or does it look like Sipgate have messed up my registration. Just want to check that I'm not being stupid before emailing Sipgate to query the two different numbers.0 -

I have emailed voipbuster to see if they will advise the fix. However their faq states they do not provide for x-lite etc.
I will post when (if) I obtain a reply. Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.0 -
I've just tried
1)turning firewall off.........no joy
2) telling router to allow all traffic to a range of ports that this uses...........no joy
3) unistalling Voipbuster software......................no joy
still no incoming speech, seems odd....thought it was a blocked port....but no !Ex forum ambassador

Browntoa,
I don't use AVG (least not on the machine with x-lite) so I don't think that is the problem. I suspect it will work some time and not at others. I have no idea why.
Can one of the other techies offer any suggestions? Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.0
