You only ask for ID if you think the person is under 18 I know I used to work in the Co-Op if i THOUGHT the person was under 21 I had to ask for ID. Now if you know someone and know theyre over that age your pretty damn thick if you forget their age.
surely if you were being monitored by a member of management(without your knowledge) and someone you knew who looked under 21 came to your till with some alcohol and you served them without asking for id would you not get a telling off from the member of management monitoring you as you didnt ask for idNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
When I worked at mr T's all checkout staff were told that it's up to us who we ask for id and if we decide to refuse to serve people because they could not produce id OR WE SUSPECTED THE DRINK WAS FOR SOMEONE ELSE then management would always back us up, so I find it hard to believe that Tesco told the OP that the checkout assistant was in the wrong, as she believed the drink was for the OP.Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before0

Are you sure it's not you who makes people not want to use this site!
I already mentioned this. Tescos would have said what they said to you to let me put it bluntly "shut you up". They don't actually mean it. Therefore they're not really saying the cashier was wrong, it's just to make you happy. Happens all the time, it's how companies do customer service.0 -
If they told her that, and actually meant it, they were wrong anyway. If the cashier thought her OH was buying for her and that she was under 18, whether to believe so was reasonable or not, then they shouldn't sell the alcohol, simple as. Surely the moral here is that if you look lke a 16 year old and want alcohol or know that someone with you will be buying it, carry ID to be safe. I can't really see how anyone can complain about a policy that seeks to prevent underage drinking and ensure the store keeps on the right side of the law.Bought, not Brought0

They wouldn't have said anything to a cashier asking for id. They're just doing their job, sometimes they get it wrong and people complain, but nothing is said as it is part of the job.
Some companies though will tell the opposite to customers to try and resolve a complaint and mainly prevent it from going any further. This is the only way they would have what they said to the op. But from what I've read here anyway there are many things the op says you have to take with a pinch of salt.0 -

They complain when the policy doesnt happen to suit them!
I work in a bar and the only people who usually kick up a fuss about being carded are those who are not actually 18. If i serve a table of 6 and only one has ID, i will not serve them alcohol if i think they are going to give it to someone else on the table. I have to keep myself on the right side of the law, i personally cannot afford the fine that would come my way if i was caught selling to a minor.
If you are over 18, carry ID, end of. I am 26 and still carry ID.The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -
