Beware sudden weather change this weekend!

Cabbagegrower - you're brave planting out so early unless you normally get very mild weather in your part of the world! I wasn't even going to sow my courgettes & outdoor cucumbers for another week! I think some fleece would be a very good idea. I've got some lettuce seedlings outsideunder cloches but that is all at the moment. Every year I sow too early so this year I'm trying to discipline myself and hold back. Did sow my outdoor tomatoes this morning though but they're indoors to germinate and will then stick them in my mini plastic greenhouse once they're an inch tall. If you're new to growing vegs, it's difficult to hold back in sowing when you're full of enthusiasm, but from bitter experience I've discovered that sowing a little later makes little difference as everything grows more quickly once the sun warms the soil up, and seeds germinate more reliably in warmer conditions and don't rot.0

Grebe - If you've got some old net curtains or fleece, it might be advisable to cover up your little plum tree at night but if we get some really heavy winds over the week end they may get blown away unless you've got some secure way of anchoring them.
May I say an extra big thanks to Primrose. I would have lost all the blossom from my wee plum tree if I had not taken your advice. The wind is biting cold here this morning and the snow is falling thick and fast. I think some of my neighbors had thought I had lost the plot when they saw what I was doing :rotfl:My tree looks rather sweet with it's net curtain tent:D Once again thankyou."To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill" Sun Tzu0 -
Grebe - glad you got your little tree protected in time. Once the snow stops falling, try and gently shake as much snow as possible off your protection. Your blossom may not be out of the wood yet. If the temperature drops below freezing tonight the blossom may yet frostburn. We have quite thick snow here too. I've just been out to clear the bird table for the birds and have three azaleas in flower which are covered in snow and which I fear will have all their petals damaged. Can't remember when we last had snow in April.0

Well, I'm not sure what's going on with the weather here!
No frost last night, or if there was it was gone by 6am, and despite a dense cloudy sky with a few flutterings of white dust around 8am, the sun is now out with clouds clearing and blue sky emerging!!!
It still feels bitterly cold when that wind catches you though. I hate northerly winds as they blow straight into my back door “You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Well I hate to say it but "up north" here in lancashire although we had a flurry of snow last night, it didn't stick. After a light frost it is now a lovely sunny spring day
