I have put a plastic cover over my just emerging peony shoots, they tried to come through a few weeks ago then a very hard frost put paid to them. However a couple of days ago I noticed they were shooting again, I am taking no chances with the cold snap this time. Could someone tell me should I cover up my tiny plum tree? I have grown it from a plum stone planted 5 years ago and this is the first time it has blossomed. I don't expect great plums from it but I would like to give it the best chance possible to fruit.

Grebe - If you've got some old net curtains or fleece, it might be advisable to cover up your little plum tree at night but if we get some really heavy winds over the week end they may get blown away unless you've got some secure way of anchoring them.

I've bought one of the tiny little blackcurrant bushes Wilkinsons were selling for £1. (They were also selling redcurrant and bilberries). It will probably be a couple of years before it produces fruit in any quantity but I wonder if anybody else bought any in previous years from them and if so, how they have fared?

Thanks Primrose, I think I will dig out an old net curtain and make a wee tent round it. It's well secured to a fence so the winds shouldn't do too much damage. Thanks again I just felt soooo sorry for all those tiny white flowers and I was chuffed to bits when it flowered.:T

If they said its going to be bad then its probably worth preparing for a heatwave :p

You might not be wrong there, felt almost tropical this afternoon! :D

What is it they say about red sky night at night? The sunset here tonight was gloriously red ;)

They also forecast heavy rain today too but it never materialised

BTW, I finally finished my greenhouse this afternoon wooohoooo!!!! :j :j :j :D

Well the weather has certainly changed here in Kent - woke up to heavy rain and blustery winds. Its not really too cold at the moment though, but it does mean another week or so before I can get back on my vegetable patch if the rain stays like this all weekend.

Same iun North Yorkshire JWF :( - it's misercable. We've not long moved here and I can't believe how windy it's been. I think it's rain, rain and more rain today.

I've got some Peony shoots coming through too - not planning to go to the shops and don't have fleece / old net curtauns to put over them - any other suggestions?

Just a thought - we do have a load of buble wrap left over from the move...would that do the job?

anything like that will do as it will keep the wind off and provide a little insulation. I don't think the forecast is for heavy frosts so the main thing to protect against is the wind. Even a cardboard box placed over the top would do, as long as it doesn't disintegrate with the rain of course!

Incidentally it has turned into a beautiful sunny day here already - typical April weather I think.
