I haven;t read all the posts but to answer teh Op I have have depression since I was 6 and if my mum had let the doctor give me meds when I was younger maybe I wouldn;t have got so ill as a young adult. But many people, doctors included, are wary of giving meds to young people.
Diet, sunlight and exercise can all help, but ultimately they will not cure, because for congenital depression there is no cure.

Have you ever been treated with cognitive behavioural therapy or ECT? Both are popular and effective treatments used to treat depression particularly treatment resistant depression.

I have to disagree here. A child of 6 has an undevelloped mind and giving mind altering medication would probably have been extremely harmful.
How do you know you were depressed at 6? Depressed compared to who or what? Unhappiness in kids is not uncommon. Assuming parents are not being cruel unhappiness often springs from envy or jealousy because little johhny cant rally understand that his parents cant afford nike trainers like the lad down the road and johhny gets bullied and the lad doesnt coz he is cool etc.
Skinty I have seen your photies and you are a stunning woman but from what you write I am not certain you realise it as much as others. You seem to focus sometimes more on what you dont want and because the unconcious mind doesnt do negative very well one ends up with what we dont want becoming reality. This is why I dont like the depression support thread. Everyone is focusing on being depressed and so they maintain their depression. It is more of a support depression thread.
Also I have to disagree that there is no cure.
Who I am is not important. What I do is.

Im a hypnotherapist but I use a lot of other things as well ie NLP CBT CMT etc. I have been interested in the mind for many years and realise that there is so much more that can be done both with and for people than is widely available. I am often flamed here because I also believe you have to get someone out of their comfort zone. Leave a depressed person in their zone and it just gets smaller as the condition takes over.

I absolutely agree with that, I suffered ptsd and reactive depression, but with CBT I completely turned my life around. I had to have some very confrontational talks with people before I realsised i wasn't being "picked on" :D

I also wonder these days if a lot of people who are depressed actually have more of a personality doisorder.. I used to do a lot of worrk with people with Pd particularly borderline and antisocial. I think that people who have a lack of coping mechanisms account for a great deal of the depressed poulation. Have you nay experience of DBT? It was something I was about to train in just as I was medically retired doh!!

Blimey someone here agrees with me LOL:rotfl: . I guess that once you realised that you were not being picked on but were being made to think and do things for yourself you changed quite quickly. ~To me all healing is self healing but with various disorders you have to enforce things. It is a bit like telling a kid to stop doing something. If you dont enforce it they will carry on and in a way the subconcious mind is like a kid. If you take people out of their comfort zone little by little they tend to react well. So often on this site people say they cant do something. How do they know? they havent even had a go:confused:
Dialectic Behavioural therapy is not something I have studied in detail (i thought it was for treatment of geordies and scousers and others with weird dialects) However I do use parts of it. This happens with me a lot. I studied NLP and found I was already using it but just hadnt thought of it like that. Many of these therapies are reworkings and tweaks of something else but that is not to say they are no good.

Another snippet on Depression and why it tends to self perpetuate.
"You cant think about something you dont want to think about without thinking about it"
this means if you think about something that you dont like you will think about it. eg if someone wants to get thin because the DONT want to be fat what are they thinking about? You guessed it, Being fat. If you focus on being fat you are unlikely to be thin. Same as if your focus is on problems what are you going to have?
Now on depression support we see people who flamed me for saying the condition was attention seeking. They denied this but then you find they are dressing up to look like a weirdo and wondering why people are looking at them.
Or you have cases where people are saying it is sooo difficult to go outside yet are being photographed out in the open:confused:
One of the problems with depression is that the persons words often dont match their actions.
Who I am is not important. What I do is.
