MC - I hope your DH is on the mend - not any easy time for you both. You're right, one never knows what's ahead so we should all try and be grateful for each healthy day that we have. Sometimes it's difficult to see past problems but when a real one arrives it puts everything into perspective. It's fine to save money but your real wealth is your good health.

  • MC so sorry to hear about your DH. I hope it all turns out ok.
I'm through my operation and have had the offending lump removed. They also did a biopsy on the Sentinel Lymph node and a couple of others. This is a new procedure and apparently they can identify if the cancer has spread to anywhere else in 95% of the cases by using this method. So instead of removing all the lymph nodes they only check a couple. As they said, if they take them out, they can't put them back in but if they need to take more they can do that. It'll be about 10 days or so before I get the results.
If nothing else shows up I will require 20 sessions of radiotherapy 5 days a week for 4 weeks.
If there is something else there then it will be more surgery and chemo. I'm praying it won't come to that.
We should have been flying to France this morning but there will be other times.
This really makes me realise how you should make the best of every day.
Thank you all for your concern and good wishes.

Update: Just heard from my stepdaughter that DH is being returned to consciousness and is being taken off the ventilator and sat up - she was having to wait outside while they did that, but it's the best news I've had for several days.

Hope that things continue to improve. Will be thinking of your DH and you.

My very best wishes to you both.

Thanks to all for the good wishes.

As of this morning he's still in Critical Care, was off the ventilator but still on oxygen therapy, was going for a scan yesterday afternoon and when I phoned this morning he was going to theatre to have the whole knee opened up, cleaned out, packed with cement that contains antibiotics, and splinted. The orthopaedic surgeon explained this to us yesterday. There is a possibility of another stage later when it is possible that another prosthesis could be put in so he wouldn't have a stiff knee permanently. But the main thing is to deal with the infection because if not dealt with it can kill him, basically! He talked about 'the infection having somewhere to hide...' i.e. behind the joint prosthesis! Which is quite a thought, really.

DH's son and daughter have both been fantastic. She lives near Leicester, he lives in Derby, but they've both been here. She brought her air-bed and sleeping-bag and stayed over Wednesday night. His company paid for him to stay in a hotel locally. They're helping me do a few practical things at home - have been as concerned for me as they have been for their Dad!

I can't go anywhere at the moment because Argos are going to deliver my new TV set. I have got absolutely fed-up with the colour fading on the existing one, and although we have a freeview box, it jumps about, rolls, flashes, does all kinds of things. Although neither of us watches TV all that much it does provide a bit of relaxation when you want it, and the other channels - BBC3 and 4 etc - are sometimes a bit more intelligent than the main 5 channels. I also took the opportunity to junk his ancient towelling robe and have bought him another - again, John Lewis are delivering that. And I couldn't visit him anyway just now if he was going to be in theatre.

Church members have also been very supportive - that's another lifeline, just like family. I parked right outside A&E on Tuesday morning, didn't pay, went straight in. Our minister said 'don't worry if you get a parking ticket, the church will pay'. And she has been absolutely fantastic, has done so much for us.

I've cancelled my registration for an OU degree course starting January. I won't be able to bother with it. I'm getting a refund of fees I'd already paid, that's why I've gone mad and bought the new TV - it was 'money that was already spent' as DH often says.

Update: He's back on Critical Care from about midday, back on the ventilator but hopefully will be able to get off it later today. Still waiting for my new TV to arrive - well, they did say 12 to 6 pm.

Oh Margaretclare, what a worry for you and poor poor Mr MC. Infections are b****ers. I have had similar worries in the past in my family.

Enjoy your new television, hope it has arrived by now.
