  • Well looks like my ski-ing is going to be curtailed for a while. We were due to go to France on 15th October to lock the house up for the winter but I went for my 1st routine mammagram 2 weeks ago and got called back for a second visit. They've diagnosed breast cancer although hopefully caught early. I've now to go into hospital on 12th ( 2nd son's 21st birthday) and will have surgery on 13th. Just been cancelling our airport parking this end and car hire at the far end. No point cancelling the flights. Mr O'Leary doesn't do refunds.

Sorry to hear that Francophile. Hope everything goes as well as it can on the 12th, as least it is caught early. Do you not have any travel insurance via a bank account or anything that you could claim the flights on. Though they don't do refunds, if you call and talk to them you may be able to do a change of dates.

((((hugs)))) to you and your family.

MW - pleased to hear your holiday plans have come to fruition, how did you do at the dentist? Maybe not into speaking verbally, but at least on here you don't have to use your mouth.

    Take care - DG

Thanks for your kind wishes Donny-gal. We do have annual travel insurance so must dig it out and see if we're covered although flights were booked a while ago and weren't that expensive so it's not the end of the world.
Will really miss our last trip of the year to the house as I love France at that time of year but hopefully there will be plenty more years.

  • We are all routing for you Francophile - there but for the grace of God etc. As you say if it's caught early enough, you have the best chance.

  • We've just been offered a long weekend house exchange to the Moorish quarter of Granada!

Just got to finalise dates and we'll be SKI-ing! (Actually they do the real thing in the Sierra Nevada overlooking Granada but I don't think we'll partake of this!).

    Looking forward to it!

  • Good on yer SDW - to get this thread up and moving again. The weekend exchange sounds like fun. I am still fuming that I missed Galicia, but hey ho - thats life. Today was grim. Was just about the clean the kitchen floor, had to rush to the loo - the loo backed up, drains blocked - grabbed my British Gas Home care contract from the file and then I went back downstairs to find the kitchen (and the cupboard under) flooded - what chaos - left the tap running by mistake. I really need a holiday - I'm getting raddled. Night night. MW

Oh MW - you certainly are ready for a break - how did the Dentist trip go? Are you A1 again now?

7DW - sounds good our next door neighbours have just done the 3/4 day coach trip from here to Granada and enjoyed it. Keep talking about it, but never seem to get on with it (DH & coaches not his favourite - prefers a steering wheel!)

Just been without internet connection for 2 days - like cutting your arm off IYKWIM.

Franophile - know you will have had your op by now - thinking of you, let us know how you are doing when you can.

    Take care - DG

I think we really should do all our SKI-ing while we can because who knows what will happen tomorrow.

A month ago DH and I were driving through southern Germany having a fabulous time, staying in lovely hotels, eating gorgeous food, seeing fantastic scenery, enjoying lovely weather.

Now, DH is in hospital. Was admitted by ambulance 3.30 am yesterday. The knee that was replaced 3 times in as many years developed an infection inside it (a blood-borne infection because all was healed up long ago), this gave rise to a very high temperature and completely disrupted his blood-glucose control as well as causing intense pain. The whole thing made him confused, disorientated and unco-operative. I called the ambulance in the wee hours of Monday morning.

Anyway, last night he went to theatre to have th abscess/infection washed out of the joint, has been on IV antibiotics, on a catheter, a lot of intensive nursing, and this morning he's 'much more with it', temperature come right down but still feeling very unwell. (I'm not surprised at that!!)

This came absolutely out of the blue, no reason for it, just one of the things that can happen especially if you're an insulin-dependent diabetic.

I was really scared Sunday night though. I thought 'this must be what it's like trying to cope with someone with dementia'. It was really frightening. In the end I was glad I'd called the paramedics in. We had a home visit from a GP last Monday and we bought a pair of crutches to get him mobile - knee was so painful he couldn't put weight on it, and I wish now that GP had sent him straight into hospital then instead of saying 'oh, you'd be waiting ages in A&E...'

Make the most of what time we have. Hopefully DH will get over this and will be fine, but who knows what is just around the corner.
