SKI-er or Sk-ater. We know how to enjoy ourselves

I need a dab radio for my `new` sewing room so have ordered a roberts revival mini from JL. Could have got it a bit cheaper from amazon but I recently bought very much more expensive set up for my lounge, from JL and didn`t like it at all. I re-packed it the next day, after trying it for a few hours and JL very quickly refunded the money, at that point I got another bose wave, which is smaller, neater and lighter with much nicer looks.
So now I have a bose wave iii in my bedroom (reduced from a shopping channel sale), a bose iv in the living area and will soon have a little roberts as well. JL customer service was fantastic and they even arranged for the parcel to be picked up, cannot beat that hence me going back to JL
I do hope I`ll be at the end of my house spending soon, it is so tedious getting rid of all the cardboard and polystyrene packaging. One more room to tackle and will do that this week, I cannot see me buying anything else tbh as I`ll be able to move the roberts around. So that is me done I think, allotment and garden are fully equipped and sorted. garage is sorted and has been turned into my workshop, I have bought lots of new wood carving tools, they were needed for me to enjoy my new hobby, so don`t need or want anything else in there.
I may well start looking forward to a good holiday after winter, first as a single, so a bit daunting to say the least and will want picking up at the door, all part of ski-ing, the luxury of being picked up.0 -
I have a pensioner friend, she is quite well off. She spoke to her son on the phone the other day and asked about the daughter in law`s parents. They travel a lot and are abroad somewhere exotic again. He said `oh they are abroad, spending my wife`s inheritance` My friend said nothing to her son but was utterly shocked that this is really how so many young people are thinking these days, as though an inheritance is a right. I too am shocked and maybe now reality has hit home
Roll on my first cruise, already booked and on a small ship, it is expensive but I feel that I will like it so it will be the first of many0 -
I'm lucky to have two sons in their thirties who have both told me to spend my money because they don't want it. My husband (not their father) and I are spending loads on holidays while we are in our early sixties as who knows what's around the corner. We've got our first cruise booked for February to hopefully see the Northern Lights in Norway. It's costing an arm and a leg, but it's something that my OH has always wanted to do. I'm planning to still leave my sons a good amount of money, unless events take the wrong turn.0

We've spent quite a bit of money in the last few weeks. Just after Easter we took off northerly aiming for the western Highlands and the Isle of Mull. 2 nights in Oban, 4 nights in a Swedish-style log cabin in the grounds of a hotel close to Mull's air-strip. We saw some wonderful scenery even though the weather wasn't great, met some charming friendly and hospitable people, stayed in rooms of a very high standard. Total of 10 nights away because we don't drive too far in a day, not any more, no enjoyment in it. Not cheap though - it would have been cheaper to go on an all-in break to Benidorm, but that would be the last thing we'd ever want to do!
Just time to get all the washing done once we're home, and then the installers arrived 8 am Monday to do our new bathroom to modern mobility and accessibility standards. It looks very much like this: http://www.mobility-plus.co.uk/walk-in-showers/the-richmond/rimless-sliding-quadrant-cubicle
The installer and his apprentice worked like Trojans to get it all done in 3 days.
It cost a lot. I liquidated some of my investments for half the cost and the other half is on DH's credit cards. I don't know if we'll ever need to sit down to shower, but the seat is there if required. We've had a problem in the past of having to bring in a plastic garden chair inside the shower cubicle. It's just an insurance policy because we don't know what the future holds.
I'm hopefully going to have revision of hip replacement sometime this summer, depending on waiting lists, junior doctors' strikes, bed closures due to winter epidemics, whatever. In the leaflet I was given detailing the treatment - it's in and out in 3 days then visiting nurses and physios - it says that 'unless you have a walk-in shower at home then a daily strip-wash will be needed for 3 months'. Not something I'd ever want to contemplate.
Just because we didn't want to go without our daily shower, we booked into a new modern local Premier Inn while the work was being done. Most modern hotels now have 'accessibility rooms' which includes a wet room. We got used to it! Our bathroom isn't big enough to be a wet room, that would be without the shower cubicle, but it has grab-rails everywhere, non-slip floor, level access, the lot.
As far as inheritance is concerned, the 3 people involved all know what we've had done and they agree with us.

Enjoy your new shower, MC. xx
Our latest SKI-ing is on a static caravan in North Wales which we bought in January. I have mentioned this on the Downsizing thread, but never got to mention it here. We have visited twice since March (site closed January and February) and are going again tomorrow for a few days.
I can't seem to post a picture, but if you look in the gallery photographs below, ours is the van with the white decking and railings.

Lease extension for son's flat is creaking along, we are still at the negotiation stage, someone is acting on our behalf because the freeholders are not pleasant to deal with. It looks as though we will have to pay about £15k including legals. Still, he will then have a lease of 160 years plus, so won't have to worry again. He has spent quite a bit of money on the flat, so obviously intends to stay, but he doesn't have that sort of lump sum.
Don't tknow whether spending an inheritance that I have received on my son counts as SKI-ing! It's spending MY inheritance !!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
We have just spent four days ski-ing on a short UK break, self-catering but mostly eating out. Visited EH and NT places, free, as we are members. So not an expensive trip. I find it hard to spend a lot. It is not in my nature. DH spends on gadgets and hobby-related items, but it is really hard to get him to take holidays.
We plan to get some work done on the house soon, which will use a bit more from the savings pot.0 -
I am in Australia at the moment, spending my youngest son's inheritance on...... visiting him! I have had a great time, especially seeing my 5 month granddaughter for the first time. I have four more days here, and will miss being here, but the old saying "east, west, home's best", holds true for me. There's something to be said about the UK, and I certainly wouldn't swap it for Oz.0

Oh, ibizafan, you make me so glad my sons is in the USA, not Australia. At least we can go twice a year.
We've just come back from Ireland! At last ive seen the Giant's Causeway.
The Titanic Museum was very good too.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
Yes Pollypenny, you are fortunate to have your grandchildren in the US. The flight to Australia is a long one to say the least. Hopefully, they will be coming over here next year, so I won't have to do it again for a while. I'll just have to make do with Skype in the meantime. It's been great seeing the baby though. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.0

We are still enjoying Spain for a couple of months twice or three times a year, and our touring caravan inbetween. Just had a total knee replacement. Going to be Grandparents at the end of if June. Should be in Cornwall for the most of June. I think 200+ miles is going to make seeing grandchild bad enough, so don't envy you two. DGMember #8 of the SKI-ers Club
Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0
