Unlocking Nokia 6500 Slide - Sim4Travel plus XSim
Options
Hello
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but its worth a shot.
I'm going to China/Thailand/Japan for 2 months in April, so purchased a Sim4Travel for the trip. I recently just upgraded to a Nokia 6500 Slide, so I went to a dodgy shop on Oxford Street in London to try and get it unlocked. He said it wasn't possible to do a software unlock, but I could using a chip. He sold me something that looks like this:

It has Xsim written on it (I think they are also called TurboSim) and you cut a square in the top of the sim card, then put the Xsim on top and put it in the phone. Thought it might be a scam, but I tried it with a Virgin sim and it worked fine.
But, it doesn't work with the Sim4Travel sim card I have. I tried the Sim4Travel card in a properly unlocked phone, and it worked. But when I put it in the Nokia 6500s with the Xsim, it refuses to work.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? I guess I can't return the Sim4Travel now because I've made cuts in it.
Thanks

I reckon its a con.....that would not overcome the network lock on the phone
and the 6500 can be unlocked with the right equipmant in a shopEx forum ambassador

I've never seen one of these sim4travel sim cards, but I do know that the turbo sims only work with the following: 1.8V, 3V and 5V SIM cards Works with normal and inverted protocol SIM cards I dont know if you could find out if your sim card is one of these types ?0

Thanks mate..... your always got the right answers.
If you get it unlocked at a shop does that not void your warranty?Use your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself.I walk with the world & the world walks with me!I don't make bad choices!!! Other people just fail to see my GENIUS !!!!0 -
I think Sim4travel is worth using in other countries, but it doesn't have free incoming calls in those. For China and Thailand local SIM cards would work out a lot cheaper. For Japan I've read that prepaid SIMs seem to be impossible for foreigners, so look at the other global SIMs0

Quote from martin
While it's not illegal, unlocking your phone WILL invalidate its warranty in most cases. Thus do think twice if you're still in the warranty period and have a super-expensive handset; while it's possible to 're-lock' some phones, this shouldn't be relied upon.
Although I have never had any problems in the past regarding them being unlocked and I've handled hundreds of phones !!0 -

I don't have one either, but I think it's the same as or fairly similar to United Mobile, which I have. As far as I know they are ordinary SIMs, albeit with some different programming for callback and so on
However, I've just tried the UM+ SIM in my only 3g phone (old Nokia 7600) and after a signal indication for a few seconds, the SIM registration fails.
Maybe Jersey Telecom don't have 3g roaming agreements (guess), but I'd expect it to log on to a 2g one. A network search gives 4 networks but it won't log on with any. Perhaps the technical details will be obvious to you guys, but not me; is it about my old phone?
But if this happens with other phones it might mean the OP won't be able to use this SIM in Japan, where there is no GSM and a 3g phone would be needed. By the way, United Mobile don't list Japan for coverage, so I was a bit surprised S4T had it0 -
Surprised this deal hasn't found its way over here yet so ill post it up. i-Smart-Sim 2008 NETWORK unlocks all Nokia's and "Allegedly" most other cell phones. Ive tried my one on any phone I could lay my hands on and its worked flawlessly so far on mostly Ericsson's Nokia's and Samsung's!
So, a portable unlocking device for 4 of your English pounds. Cracking deal if you ask me considering people on some mobile phone forums are charging £20 upwards

Does it actually 'unlock the phone'? Or does it just spoof the communications so that the phone doesn't care about the network that your SIM belongs to?
(I suspect the latter)The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster!
