Sold out: Refurbished Advent 9117 Laptop, £269.99 delivered.

Currys currently has a range of slightly older refurbished laptops on its site. This one specifically has two main selling points; it sports an intel dual core processor rather than a Celeron (1.46 Ghz) making it faster than the Celeron model above, and it has a 17" screen. It comes with 1GB RAM, but is upgradeable to 2GB. As a refurbished model, it comes with a 12-month warranty. Go quick if you want one.

Quick Spec: Processor: Dual core 1.46 Ghz T2310 RAM: 1 GB Hard Drive: 120GB Display: 17" 1280x800 TFT Graphics: Mobile Intel GMA X3100, shared memory Optical Drive: DVD rewriter Battery Life: 1.2 hrs approx Wi-Fi: Yes Operating System: Vista Home Basic

This doesn't appear to be sold out - I've just ordered one at any rate... plus it comes with Vista Home Premium, not Basic.

    Cheers, hope it's nice

  • As someone who finds Mac's so much easier to use, can anyone out there tell me how I may be able to get money off (especially) Mac books? They are so expensive but just about bullet (and fool) proof. Thanks

Apple do a corporate/education discount but only about 5%, or buy second hand.

You could try Dixons 'Tax Free' at Eurotunnel or an airport. Obviously you have to actually go somewhere to benefit from this, and the 'Tax Free' at Dixons is often not as much of a saving as you might expect.

However, my personal favourite... Book yourself a nice little holiday to Hong Kong or the USA and go and buy your Mac there :D Depending on the model you are buying you could quite possibly save yourself enough money to pay for the flight.

Obviously this doesn't get you anywhere near a £300 laptop, but if you're looking at buying a Mac I assume you've already considered that.

For example (and using some very rough currency exchange estimates of £1 = US$2 = HK$15.5)
Based on the Apple website prices, the cheapest MacBook is currently £699 in the UK, but only $1099 (£550) in the USA, or $8600 (£555) in HK.

If you go for the base MacBook Pro then you're looking at £1299 in the UK, $1999 (£1000) in the USA, or $15400 (£994) in HK.

Factor in the reduced cost of other accessories and the international extended warranty (about the only extended warranty I'd buy), and it can save you a fair bit of money (especially if you are going anyway). I've bought two Macs and and an iPod this way in the past 2 years. One Mac and the iPod have had to have warranty repairs/replacements and I have had absolutely no problem doing this at the Apple stores in the UK.

(Note: I think the US prices will be subject to Sales Tax at the point of sale)

well, I usually try and buy refurbished Apples . I got my AppleTV about half-price (note: it's NOT a TV!) there's usually no direct link to UK Apple Refurb _ that I've found, you just have to go to http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore/ , webStore, then click down the bottom right-hand-side. Here's a quick link I use to see what's on offer Apple Italy Refurb via a click-thru don't click the "learn More" "Impara di Piu" red button or they'll transfer you to Apple_Italy_refurb store - whilst filling your browser with cookies! I find that UK Refurb is often cheaper than the other EU stores, but the link - to which I have no connection, is a useful quick guide.

Many Apple Refurb laptops/devices seem new, open box type sales, often up to 25% (from their ORIGINAL price) - you do have to check and understand exactly what is currently available and some subtle spec/model/price differences. eg Is the MacBook the latest C2D processor and what is the bus speed? However , I find all MacBooks from 2GHz and up are perfect for use, there are rumours that later this year there will be a radical new design. I bought last year's model Macbook for £539, stuck in 2 x 2GB £17 So-Dimms from Jersey, Wow! makes Vista look like Win '98

My daughter, 12, wants to buy herself a laptop. She is aware that it is going to cost her quite a bit of money but is prepared to save what is required for something decent. But what us decent? Can anyone give us some advice.

She wants to be able to use the internet, run windows Vista and just general PC things like ms office etc. One that is going to last a while and something that is fast with plenty memory/ram (I'm not really sure what I'm talking about but I'm sure someone can guide us both).
