Fingers crossed - it looks like my refund should be in my account within the next week. The whole experience has been very stressful (it was only £9 but that was NOT the point) and I suggest that anyone who comes across mychild should steer well clear of them.Mortgage: Was: £154,495 Oct 2039 Now: £82,869.54 May 2037Swagbucks ~ £130 (2024 ~ £395)Surveys ~ £139.39 (2024 ~ £280.14)Make £2025 in 2025 #5 ~ £964.62 ~ (2024 ~ £2,561.04)0

I'm getting mighty pee'd off with these people. I get a call every single day and no-one speaks, they just stay silent for about 15 seconds and put the phone down.
I've written a stroppy email demanding they take me off their database immediately. What a dreadful company they are.11th Heaven prizes Number 103

They guy who runs "my child" is called Chris Davies; he was being chased by a government agency because he refused to answer questions about a company he took into liquidation, owing lots of people a lot of money. He had to agree not to be a company director for 7 years.
Esther Rantzen used to be associated with the company but she legged it as soon as she found out how it was run.0 -
I'm Mark Edwards, the publisher of My Child.
I was saddened to see that so many people have had problems with My Child, and want to let you all know what we're doing now and in the future to put things right.
My Child Ltd was recently bought by Electric Word plc (where I have worked for five years). We are a stock-market-listed (AIM) publisher who specialise in publishing information about education and sport. We have thousands of satisfied customers and pride ourselves on our high quality publications and customer service.
Having taken over My Child - which we did because we want to help parents help their children with their education, and My Child's high editorial quality will help us do that - our top priority is to deal with the issues that caused so much concern before we took over. The new My Child team has moved into the Electric Word office to work alongside our experienced publishing and customer service professionals.
It should now be much easier for customers to get through to us by phone on our customer service line 0845 1770112 between 9am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Or you can email enquiries@mychild.co.uk. Or, if you want to contact me directly you can email me at mark.edwards@electricwordplc.com.
We are doing everything we can to prevent the problems that people have had with payments, returns, etc.
Our aim now is to combine My Child and Electric Word's expertise in education to produce the best offering for parents available anywhere. We are committed to making sure that My Child is an excellent resource for parents that provides an excellent service.
I'll keep an eye on this board and will post again with updates and answers to any questions you have - don't forget, if you have any questions or issues you can email or PM me.
Best wishes
Mark Edwards

Hi Mark
I think for most people it's a case of too little too late. The main problems with mychild are/were over eager sales assistants trying to get as many customers as possible, sometimes through saying we'd "won a competition" and also the very, very painful process of getting refunds.
[strike]I wish you all the best in trying to turn mychild around, but [/strike]I for one will not be a returning customer.Mortgage: Was: £154,495 Oct 2039 Now: £82,869.54 May 2037Swagbucks ~ £130 (2024 ~ £395)Surveys ~ £139.39 (2024 ~ £280.14)Make £2025 in 2025 #5 ~ £964.62 ~ (2024 ~ £2,561.04)0 -
Interestingly, if you check the Electric Word website, you will find that they acquired a majority stake in "MyChild" in November 2007 (hardly "recently") which means ALL the problems mentioned in this thread (OP was March 2008) occurred with Electric Word in charge.
A quick look here:
http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/my-child-magazine-c69889.html
confirms it was MyChild/Electric Word (incorrectly referred to as Electric World) who were taking payments and making it near impossible to get a refund back in May 2008.Well, you know, my ancestry isn't all hamster.
I'm one-sixteenth wolf with, you know, a little wolverine in there somewhere.0 -
