ShockingPink wrote: »I don't go to Slimming World, so do excuse any ignorance I display here! I was doing Weightwatchers though (and still go to meetings even though I'm now doing healthy eating successfully instead). The reason I gave up WW methods was because I think I'm a right clever-clogs and can't cope with all the silly inconsistencies... crispbreads good, real bread bad??
Anyway, regarding home-made bread and home-made pasta, I'd cheat the system. If shop-bought pasta is a free food, treat home-made (as long as it's not stuffed with cheese!) in the same way. Similarly, if 57g bread is a "healthy extra" weigh out 57 grams of plain home-made bread and include it in your diet.
That's what I'd do, anyway!:D
I think someone once told me the reason dried pasta is free and fresh pasta (HM or shop bought) is not is because of the oils required to keep the fresh stuff fresh. Might be totally wrong (might have even dreamt it:rolleyes: ).
A lot of the SW principles DO hold up for old-style. There is an encouragement to eat fresh food and to make things like pasta sauces and currys from scratch rather than use jars.
The batchelors pastas and savory rices seem to be the exceptions (along with those horrible cup a soup things) - i am not sure why they have been chosen by the SW nutritionists over other brands.
I can see why they would want to include some kind of ready made food, it makes the SW diet more acessible to the masses who would find a ready meal-free way of life too much of a big change to make. Its a case of improving their diet, not neccessarily making a sudden turn to old-style. Some people have no desires to be old-style (or even know what it means!).
Just out of interest - whats so bad about low fat yoghurt? i buy low fat greek natural yoghurt to eat with fruit etc.0 -
Agree with Shocking Pink, I can't see why HM pasta can't be a free food on a green day, or why you just can't substitute 57g of your HM bread as a HE.
We all tweak it a bit (or maybe it's just me lol!)

Low-fat greek yogurt's fine; I think it's the added thickeners in the fruit yogurts people are objecting to - either gelatine (urggh!) or something like guar gum.C'est le ton qui fait la chanson0 -
If SW doesn't fit in with your cooking/eating plans then why not choose something else? You can count calories, or carbs or just make your portions a bit smaller. Instead of your usual 3 slices of homemade bread only have 1 or two. I am no expert. Have done all the slimming clubs, if you want to eat everything, WW points is good, if you can't live without bread or pasta I wouldn't do something like SW.
I have lost weight and gained it all back and some with all these clubs, on diets off diets, I think the best way is portion control. There is a losing weight thread on here, where they discuss eating home cooked meals and portion control, has been really helpful. And I agree that some of the so called diet foods encouraged by the clubs are just vile incl. The cup a soups and savoury rice but that is probably what majority of people want.0 -
i have been doing SW and have found it has made me cook more as most of the jarred stuff and ready meals are very high in syns, i think there are exceptions that they choose such as the pasta n sauce and the mug shots, i dont personally use the pasta in sauce very often but i do use the mugshots sometimes.Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts0

My mum is a gold member of WW, always cooked home made an manged it. In fact I really must ask her how she did it.
I'm not following a particular plan, but I do like to eat healthly etc. I picked up a book recently called slimming worlds 30 minute meals - and it is full of food ideas, I would say 99% cooked from scratch.
I've found it on tesco books HERE.
Also someone I work with has lost a massive 4 stone on Slimming world, but she does tend to have instant mash etc etc, but it must work for her!Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.

Cleosmum, could I ask you a huge favour? Could you ask your Consultant about the homemade pasta thing please?
Yep, sure can. How much oil goes into yours? You can use 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil as a healthy extra. Just had a quick check:
Tesco Pasta, Fresh, Egg Fusilli, chilled 100g 2.5 syns on green.
Basic/Non Branded Foods: Pasta, plain, all types, fresh 28g boiled 0.5 syns on green.

I would use the basic/non branded figure and see how it goes.0 -

Do you mean my comments about yogurt ? I just wanted to know why my hm yogurt (much cheaper;) ) couldn't be accommodated by the WWs Core plan. I still don't understand why it can't -seems the only reason is because it doesn't come in a tub
I've been mulling this weight loss lark over in the bath this afternoonand I've come to the conclusion that if I want to serve my family a traditional British diet which I was trying to do in an effort to reclaim British cuisine, then I'm not going to lose much weight.
If, however I cook lots mediterranean style food or spicy things, ethnic salads, exotic fruit and veg then I will be able to come up with healthy yet tasty dishes.
I've been doing my best to cook seasonal British veg but I'm throwing in the towel with the cabbage and purple sprouting, it's no good -I only like them dripping in butter or bacon fat. My family don't like them at all. So it's avocados, cherry tomatoes, peppers, chillies, rocket, aubergines -things I really love and I don't care if they haven't come from up the road anymore. My health is more important to me than my food principles at the moment. I am not going to end up like my mother (2 knee replacements).0 -
I do SW and I've not had a single Pasta'n'Sauce or packety thing like that.
I much prefer to cook my own sauces from scratch.
With regard to the original question about home made pasta, I don't make my own pasta, but if i did, I would only Syn any oil or fat that it contained. From my book, fresh pasta is 1 Syn per 28g uncooked on a green day, now presumably that accounts for any oil that is in it
I have lost 2.5 stones on SW since January 2007 and barely a week goes by that I don't tweak the plan to fit in with my life.
There are some fantastic recipe ideas from MrsMcawber on the OS lose weight thread and I'm sure several could be adapted to fit SW.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
Evening all
Just wanted to pop on and say that i think we have quite a few folks on the old style weightloss thread who use WW and slimming world... including Taplady -hello to you... Wondered if you might get some help on there with what folks eat on those programmes..
I did WW for many years on and off (along with every other diet going:o )but finally stopped "dieting" when i joined the OS weight loss thread and now lose weight cooking as much from scratch as possible and without using the diet foods, low fat items that i relied on for years...but I know that WW do have 2 systems..1 still using points and 1 which has lots of free foods -i always thought they had "borrowed" the ides from slimming world..
ooooh just saw that i got a mentionthankyou whatatwit
