the thread IS called SNEAKY ways to save the pennies!! i say good on ya. food left after breakfast is only throwed away anyway!!
there's sneaky (ie diguising own brands in branded bottles)

    then there's dishonesty

Interestingly DD and I watched Outnumbered tonight where the parents are intending ot 'inflate' their losses following a burglary.

I'm about to have a new bathroom. I have two pieces of claimable damage - a cracked sink and the cistern cover broken in two - we think the cat jumped up and knocked it off. This would be, according to insurers, two separate claims and therefore two excesses (ie 2 x £50) to pay out. I have decided not to even bother, because I would probably clear £50 - my plumber has 'offered' to 'sort out' the insurance but I would rather sleep nights.
    So my NCD is protected.
and other people won't pay for my greed.
Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY

Thought of a new one earlier. Popped to Asda to get milk & bread & decided not to get a basket, therefore I could only buy what I could carry so although the chocolate aisle was very tempting, my arms were aching from holding milk, bread & cat food so I didn't bother to pick anything else up!

So some people are taking sneaky to mean dishonest ? I thought it was more ways that people would not initially think of, being inventive etc. OS is never about dishonesty imho! Yes the waste is thrown away but it is still theft no matter how it is dressed up. TBH it would be best if the OP got caught, and let the hotel decide how they view this 'sneakiness'. It would be the same as going into Tesco, paying for a basket of shopping, and sneaking another small basket out under your coat 'for later'!
May sound harsh but if we all start stealing then what is the world coming too ?
PS There are some genuine good tips on here, which are not dishonest :).
Happy New Year to all of you (even the 'sneaky' ones ;)).

To save money by not eating out, try and replicate your favourite restaurant meals at home. Eg steak and home made chips (slice up some potatoes, no need to peel, parboil for a few minutes, then put in a hot oven with a little oil). If you buy value packs of steak you can then place a couple of steaks in the freezer for next time.

A sneaky way to save money on electricity bills, is to run around turning things off of standby. It's estimated that up to 10% of our bill can be energy wasted on standby.
I have always done this too, but found out yesterday I should't be doing it with our printer, as it charges and uses ink everytime its switched on. So now we only switch it on when needed and then leave it on until the computer goes off. Before we used to switch it on in a morning and then off at night, with me sneakily switching it off several times a day. So in theory we could use up the ink and not print anything! Unfortunately we usually print something everyday, so have to have it on most of the time. Your printer may not be the same, but might be worth checking into.

Custard tips this time which may be of use to someone:D I used to buy the posh custard sauce many moons ago but now find that I like a carton of ordinary custard served cold just aswell. If you are using a carton it's worth cutting them open when nearly empty- we reckon we found about another 1/4 pint or so lurking in there [tetra pack then washed up and recycled]. Using custard powder is a cheaper option than buying the premade stuff and I notice that Mr S now do a chocolate custard version of the premade stuff in the chiller cabinet. My version of chocolate custard for my trifle is to make up a pint of custard but with 3tbsp of custard powder rather than the normal 2tbsp. Thicken in the microwave and then stir in a bar of value plain chopped up chocolate until it's melted.

Thankfully we like the instant stuff that only needs boiling water to make a delicious custard & it comes in reduced sugar or fat options too so handy to keep in the cupboard for my diabetic mum.
I think I've seen a tip somewhere about adding some cocoa powder into the custard powder-version to make it chocolate; just wish I could remember where...

The other day I saw Phil Vickery make a quick sponge filling using an packet of instant custard and stirring in a block of chocolate, trouble is I can´t remember if he used the full amount of water or not to make up the packet.....

I don't want this to turn into an argument, but why is it not like stealing from Tesco (or anywhere else) ?
For the record I agree that piling up your plate then not eating it is wasteful!
If I owned a hotel I would not do serve yourself buffets, instead make people a served sensible sized breakfast.
Lets just disagree on this, I (and others) think it is stealing, you (and others) do not.
