I've been doing a stocktake of all the cupboards and freezer this morning- I have combined all those bits and pieces of dried herbs that I probably bought for a single recipe but don't like on its own normally and have made up my own mixed herbs pot from them. I may well add some ground pepper aswell to zing it up further. It can then be used in soups, spag bol etc. Better than chucking them I reckoned.
Happy new year!

i think you are totally over reacting its like a doggie bag , i think its more disgusting when people pile up there plates and dont eat it, i hate food waste to much gets thrown away,if i owned a hotel i would rather it got eaten, a couple of bread rolls really, its nothing like stealing from tesco
Not really a doggy bag when people deliberately plan to take food for two meals (ie their lunch) when the hotel intends to serve 1 meal.
And who pays? The 'honest' customer, who is then charged a little more. That's where the Vicar got it wrong when he told 'poor' people to 'shoplift'. - again it's the CUSTOMER who pays - because prices go up to cover the losses.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

One thing I notice is that people usually find a way to "justify" doing something they shouldnt - so I'm quite interested to see what excuses are coming up at present as to why it's alright to steal. Most people just aren't going to say "Yes - I know I'm wrong - but I intend to do it anyway" - they would rather think up some excuse as to why it's acceptable to do so.0

I don't want to get into the discussion about doggy bags... but regarding 'the vicar', I think the fact that other customers would end up paying was his point. That is that the cost of helping those in need is spread over society.......... not sure that I agree with him, but I do get his point. A pity the 'meja' only hyped up the shoplifting part of it.0 -

and @ Valli some people pay for breakfasts they dont eat but never get a reduction on their stay..
I must add I have never done this as never stayed anywhere where breakfast isnt an astronomically charged extra. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
I agree. if you pay for the food then surely it matters not if you eat it there and then or have it later..I can never manage breakfast and were I to take a couple of bread rolls to eat later it costs the establishment much less than someone who eats a huge full English and a large round of toast.

But the poster who originally put forward this 'money-saving tip' wasn't paying for the food - well, she was paying for breakfast and 'taking' lunch without paying.
I took my elderly Mum to a Warner's place last year and the people at the table opposite ours took extra bread rolls, bacon and butter every day as they left and however you try to justify it, it IS stealing (taking something you haven't paid for) and they knew it which was why it was done sneakily. As to waste food - there is a Chinese buffet restaurant in Leeds with a notice on the wall asking patrons to only put on their plate, food they intend to eat and that wasted food will be charged for - IMO, a good way of avoiding the problem.
The title of this thread uses the word 'sneaky' to mean using low price alternatives to expensive items and decanting into the expensive bottles etc....genuine money saving, not stealing.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -

I have always done this too, but found out yesterday I should't be doing it with our printer, as it charges and uses ink everytime its switched on. So now we only switch it on when needed and then leave it on until the computer goes off. Before we used to switch it on in a morning and then off at night, with me sneakily switching it off several times a day. So in theory we could use up the ink and not print anything! Unfortunately we usually print something everyday, so have to have it on most of the time. Your printer may not be the same, but might be worth checking into.
Hi Murrell, I have a laser printer and only use it a couple of times a week. Not sure then if it works like yours. A deliberate ploy keeping it switched off as I was getting buried in paper that I'd printed off. Now it's off, makes me think carefully about printing. Most of the time, copying and pasting something and putting it into a word document for reference is handy enough. This is megga simple, and am sure cost consious people already do it! When we've had visitors in the past, and I'm doing continental breakfast (croissants, toast, pancakes etc.) I make huge piles of everything and put them out in the middle of the table. I always over-cater because I don't want people to be hungry.
This time we had visitors, I got DD3 to make up little menu cards and go round waitress style asking people how many slices of toast, crumpets, croissants they wanted - and made exactly that amount. I've saved at least half a packet of each thing by doing this as before I would have cooked up all the packets!
The birds in my garden are starting to regret me being on this thread as they're getting many fewer leftovers now!!!0
