Sneaky ways to save the pennies

I have been known to iron used wrapping paper!!! If it is creased cover it with some ribbon (used and ironed!) Or cover it with clear poythene from a really cheap roll. Try florists- but a local craft shop does a massive role for £2 990

Not sure if this has been listed before (so many pages still to read) but I make my own cleaning spray by using the cheap multi surface cleaner (28p a bottle) fill a spray bottle about 2/3 then top up with water - have been doing this for months and everything comes up shiny and clean0

Don't know if it's been on here before - but when you've finished putting fuel in a car, lift the hose right up from the pump end and let the contents pour into the tank - and over a year, it's got to be a gallon or two free at least.....DFW - Debt Free Date July 2013, LBM Oct 2011
Total Debt Sept 2011 £23,708.39
Paid so far £2,383.91 :money:
Current Debt £21,560.56

I just wanted to share with you what happened to me today and if you are in the same situation you might save yourself more than a few pennies.
I recieved my first pay from my new employer today. I gave the payroll department my P45 so I just assumed that I would get put on to the correct tax code but I overheard some colleagues talking about that their tax seemed high and like me they had received their first pay today. Anyway I went to look at my payslip and I had been charged emergency tax (tax code BR) so the company had ignored using my tax code on my P45. My work colleagues had also been charged the BR rate.
After having rung the inland revenenue, they will now write to my employer and let them know what tax code I should be on so this will all be corrected on my next pay and I shall be getting the money back next month.
I have learnt an important lesson today by never assuming anything and always check your payslip properly. It might be worth checking yours too.
Becky
Obviously your payroll dept doesnt know what they are doing. I do payroll and anyone with a P45 that has not had a break in work goes straight onto their tax code as per P45 and anyone filling in a P46 as 'this is my only job' goes on the normal tax code on week1 (which means you pay a normal tax amount anyway) I've found that as I deal with revenue matters online I get notices of the correct tax codes quite quickly.
BR is only used these days when some-one has more than one job in my opinion.

That's not free surely, you've paid for it, you're only taking what's you've paid for!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Hmmm, an interesting question. Presumably, you're following somebody that hasn't done this at the pump. This means you're getting their dregs, plus your dregs.
If nobody did it, then things would work out fairly - i.e. you'd get the previous persons dregs and leave yours for the next chap.
However, by doing this, you're messing with the system. The person after you will get less petrol than 'normal', unless they also do this trick. Even if they do the trick, they will only be 'evens', while you are 'ahead'. If they don't do the trick they get less that they paid for - they have to pay to fill the hose (now empty) and then they'll leave it full of fuel for the next person.
I'm not sure where I stand on this one. You're effectively getting fuel you didn't pay for and potentially screwing over the next customer.
I guess it's a matter of personal consience :cool:0 -
Surely the ultimate winner is the garage owner, it would be the first customer who would 'miss out'. From the initial first customer (from the very first sale from a newly fitted pump) the garage owners will be 'in credit' by the amount left in the pipe at the end of service. After that first sale, everybody only gets what's been pumped out of the underground storage tank per sale Not a huge amount, even given that most garages have upwards of 4 different pumps depending on the size of the garage.0

LOL at all this! I guess you could say that the ultimate winner is the Government screwing us for all those duties and taxes, but on the other hand that comes back to us all, though not always as fairly allocated as we might like! Except that which is spent on MPs expenses etc etc etc:rotfl:No doubt we could debate this for hours. BEst do that in the pub, eh?"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. just got an email from mr T about Christmas delivery slots now being available.I went to the site at once only to see the slots that supposedly came available at 1a.m today have all gone!!I used to get a prior email a week before for regular customers but not this year
Also noticed they are charging £6 on all deliveries that week:(
STILL I am not worried as I booked 3 slots at Waitrose after the driver there told me they were already available over a month ago............and even better they are free delivery:):)
