my 2 student sons were also caught out like this, despite them filling in the correct forms before they worked for a few days in the summer sales they were charged emergency tax and when they tried to claim back from the inland revenue they were told they could not get it back till the end of the tax year even though they said they would not be earning their tax allowence in the year:mad::mad::mad: this took quite a lot out of what they earned and they coulod really have done with the money then, should be a way of tax for students and other temp workers to get refund quicker.(I gave up doing Christmas work because of this as was taxed at 2nd job rate)

Rosemary54, I totally agree. If your sons are working this Christmas or anytime before April 2010 their new employer should be able to sort out their tax overpayment through their payroll. It might be worth checking with the inland revenue if their is a form to fill in if you know that you will not earn more than the threshold where you start to pay tax (I think the threshold is around £4800 per year) so they can avoid being charged tax while they are studying. Hope they get their money back soon.
No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23
    Boots points:£39.21. Extra money in 2012:£674.59. In 2013 £603.48. 2014: £85. 2015: £0 :j

Becky I did get them to fill in the right forms in advance as I had a feeling this would happen but their firm totally ignored it and the tax said they had to wait:mad::mad::mad: but thanks anyway:beer:

definitely worth checking. you can also do a self assessment on line - which is a bit of hassle, but I have to do it for my OH anyway as she has some freelance earnings.

every year for 3 years her employer has got her tax wrong, and we end up with £800 refund. I know I should be bothered as we could be saving the money - but its like a giant piggy bank which you can't get at

make sure you do it by september so that if it goes the other way and we owe them it can be paid back over the next year out of PAYE
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

  • The taxman will pay like 8% interest tax free on over due tax refunds. They supposed to send it back to you automatically I believe. It would require it to be overdue 12 months since last end of tax year though I think it is

If you are at home in the morning during the week. BBC 1 is running a programme between 9.15 and 10 am called Rip Off Britain, lots of useful information being covered there about utility bills, the difference between 0845, 0844, 0800 phone numbers etc. It was shown for the first time this morning while I was doing my ironing.

Thanks Becky, when I saw this I rushed to the TV and managed to catch most. Will b watching @ 9.15 tomorrow. Julie

Apologies if this seems a bit of simple pimple suggestion but it was a new idea to me. I occasionally buy [not make that's why I'm such an OS amateur:rotfl::rotfl:] dips which I serve with tortilla chips as an easy starter when I have friends over for dinner. Leftover dips then retreat to the back of the fridge not to see the light of day again until I "rediscover" them [complete with mould:o] For a change this time I have remember the leftover dip from Sat evening and had it as sandwich filling for today's lunch:j

I have started to top up my milk with dried milk once the bottle goes down to half full, no-one seems to notice, ( unless I get caught doing it, then they say the milk tastes funny;)) and it saves trips to the Co-op for more.
I tend to buy "extras" if I go into any shop, so try and stay out of them unless I have to!

I use self tan moisturizer on the parts that show at this time of the year to get my skin looking better in party wear,it saves money on a salon tan(not that I have ever had one mind!) and you can probably buy it cheaply as stores get rid of summer items.( mine came with a goody bag and as I am a sun worshipper I don't need it in the summer)I also use one on my face which is quite thick and shiney(the cream not my face!!!) but okay on days when I don't go out :)

on a different subject, gather greenery now and keep it in a bucket in a shed for Christmas flower arrangements, there is lots of good stuff around on country walks and shrubs with berries will not yet have been ravaged by the birds. With houses being hot over the Christmas period it is good to use all foliage arrangemants saving money on expensive flowers that will not last as well in the heat

Similar idea here Rosemary, I too like to get a good tan in the summer months and I prolong it by mixing (in palm of my hand) some fake stuff with body lotion a couple of times a week after shower. I came back from holiday 2 months ago and had compliments on my tan only last weekend when I was wearing a party dress. I do the same with my face but with a special tan for face plus my usual moisturiser. I find this keeps tan at a natural, healthy looking level without looking 'tangoed'.

Don't know if it's been on here before - but when you've finished putting fuel in a car, lift the hose right up from the pump end and let the contents pour into the tank - and over a year, it's got to be a gallon or two free at least.....
