When my eye lash brush which I used after applying mascara broke instead of buying a new one I cleaned an old mascara applicator with water and this works much better than the brushes you buy.

Also, I bought Clarins white eye shadow and I now also realise it's great to apply on top of any eye shadow. I love this, because I can now use up all the old eye shadows I have but don't like but applying the white eye shadow suddenly brings the old ones to life.

just bought 20 cm length of Christmas fabric from John Lewis for £1.40 (they sell 10 cms upwards in multiples of 10 cm )which will make lots of hearts shaped decorations for the tree and to hang around the house filled with spices like star anise.
Also a pack of 5 plain window cards to put cross stich pictures in for birthdays etc for £1.90 (just need to do the cross stitch and make the hearts!)

0.89 tonnes/annum at http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/calculator/calculate for the home, 1.75 for appliances and 2.01 for travel

    2008-2009 imeasure.org.uk = 914kg on electricity useage - total of 4.73 tonnes/annum.

something doesn't add up .... admittedly we are a huge old building but switch off everything [I'm like a banshee if the meter goes over "29/month!! :D ] and we only have 2 wood fired stoves to heat the place and cook on. My DS and DD have a single 2Kw heater to top up their bedrooms.

These calculators are sooooo generalised that it's just not fair to expect a decent reading from them, but it's better than nothing I suppose. I don't use the tumble dryer once a week, once a fortnight if that! If you use www.imeasure.org.uk then you get an accurate reading of your electricity at least. I wish that I could find something else to add other elements onto my household calculations. Anyone have any advice? - I'm going to average everything out to the results from imeasure since I can prove these are accurate.

    thanks in advance

Our vet last week rang us to enquire where we had got our stapless stapler from [it was actually a freebie given to use at a recent eco fair] They were after one because they shred all their paperwork and then give it to a local concern for pet bedding [it was taking them ages to remove all the staples]. I compost my shredded paper as I don't have a small animal for which this would be any good [psychocat prefers to sneak under the duvet given half a chance:eek:] but thought this tip might save someone a couple of bob!

One night, we decided to have a girly night out (a while ago now!!!). so we all got together at one house a few hours early to get ready, we all took a bottle of wine and we were drinking while we were getting ready. In the car (we got a lift) we all continued to drink (cheap!!). so by the time we got to town we were all very merry and we went round the clubs and drank water. we had a fantastic night and all alot cheaper than the prices they charge in town! ;)
we do all that but don't drink water all night, but deffo spend less when we've had a drink first;)

  • Hmm, I use a teabag 3 times! I use one of those scrunchies in the shower it makes the showergel go further! I bung jacket potatoes in with whatever else is in the oven and keep them in the fridge for lunches at work or quick tea's. I use baby lotion as make up remover, much cheaper!

Hi everyone, todays saving is washing the clothes @ 30 in the machine and hanging on the airer to dry as it is raining outside.
Cooking a one pot dinner in the SC.
Burning private papers on the fire instead of plugging in the shredder.
Burning free wood on the fire to heat the house.Using a little coal also.
Snapping off any un-needed lights I find left on.
Re putting up some shelfs that had fell down (make do and mend)

Just been reading this on doubling up - it is new to me but I shall be giving it ago "something can easily be cooked at the same time in the same pot - hard boiled eggs for example can be cooked with pasta or pea's".
Well, I use potato water in gravy sometimes and always try to fill the oven when cooking. I learn something new every day!
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.
  • When clothes shoppin i shop completly out of season especially for the children.
At the end of summer stores are getting rid of their excess so i buy shorts/swimwear and t-shirts for next year. In January i buy things for christmas.crackers, cards, wrapping paper, gift boxes of toiletries stocking fillers. Its amazing how much some stores cut down the price of these items to less than 3rd of their original price.
Also I have a box that gets stored in my attic so whan i do the shopping every month i buy extras or bulk buy when their on sale and put them away for my hamper.Especially t bags, coffee and tins. This way we get exactly what we want and more importantly what we will eat (iv never had a hamper were every item gets eaten).saves a large amount of money at christmas and having to budget for the BIG christmas shop because all you'l need is your fresh and frozen foods.

I've seen people give warnings about cooking hardboiled eggs with anything else. You need to be careful about the eggshells being contaminated with chicken poop - remember where they've been when being laid ;).
