Sneaky ways to save the pennies

Great thread!
I'll make a couple of contributions:
1. If anyone has an electric toothbrush, notice how you only put a little spot of toothpaste on the brush because of it's round shape? Well, I have reverted back to the standard toothbrushes and still only put a spot of paste on that too. Most, if not everyone will cover the entire rectangle brush but I just put a spot on there and let it froth up inside my mouth.
2. If anyone has a cat, you can buy a bag of cat treats in Wilkinsons for 60 odd pence. I've had them now for about 2 months and have about a quarter left. This is better for me, personally, instead of buying 7 or 8 cat chews that you only get in a pack at Tesco or Asda.
I tried going without shampoo but I have the type of hair that gets greasy very very quickly and I resisted for about 5 days before I gave up.
Here is a Spaghetti Bolognese recipe that I found but beware, it's more of a student's recipe, however it worked out to 57p for a meal for me who is a single male:
Ingredients
Spaghetti (the long kind)
Sausages (tinned value hot dogs or proper frozen)
Tinned value chopped tomatoes
Method:
This works best with tinned hot dogs but frozen works ok. Just chop the sausages up, mix in with the chopped tomato. Cook spaghetti as normal and pour sausage/tomato mixture on top.
It may not sound good but it tastes really nice. I can't use the hob to cook mince right now as it's out of action so this is the next best thing.
I got 6 dinners out of this.0 -
Ah Yes Blackberry season!!! And Rosehip!!! And Elderberries. Lets just say Hick Hick! Ii have plenty of buckets on the go and having a go at making wine. Really excited and free food from the hedgrows! Also my daughter really enjoyed helping picking them.0

And don't forget nuts! Around here there are lots of hazelnuts. When I lived in London, I used to go to Wimbledon Common to gather nuts, and my mum mentioned that there are loads of sweet chestnuts at Richmond Park.0

My husband has picked 96lbs of blackberries. He makes lovely blackberry wine. He makes one batch then freezes the rest until he has time to make more.0 -

oh yes i have my eyes watching all of these things right now (only the hips are ready now though the elderberries will be soon then the brambles)
i got so excited last week when i finally figured out that this tree my daughter and i pass every time we go into town is a mulberry tree, with actual berries on it! (they take years and years to fruit) however today on closer inspection my enthusiasm waned considerably when i realised that even if i had a ladder and the inclination i could strip the entire tree and maybe have enough for 1 big batch of jam, maybe!
oh well, least i'll finally get to try ONE (and not much more!)0 -

Good on ya for that confuzzled - mulberry trees are so rare - I know of only one locally and the fruit from that has to be shared between a LOT of people - as many people know about it. So - its only a few berries each from that to be fair.
I DO hope the guy who picked 96lb of blackberries had found a VERY remote area indeed to pick from - as that could be an awful lot of blackberries that other people were trying to find for eating purposes that were no longer there otherwise. Please say no-one else wanted those blackberries too.....
Its part of the Foragers Code that one only takes a little from each bush and leaves plenty for other people and wildlife. (Thinking now of a couple of cooking apple trees near here where I like to go and gather a few of them once or twice a season. One of those trees at least is widely known about - but I'm aware theres a man living locally who I've seen gathering from both trees - and he literally takes the LOT and leaves nothing for anyone else. I walked up to the very well-known tree one time and he had loads on him and he very grudgingly walked away from the tree when he saw me coming and was looking longingly at the THREE apples that were all he'd left for everyone else.......grrrr!)0 -
