Many card shops also usually print a "large letter stamp" warning on the back of their larger cards/packaging.

It doesn't quite work like that. They privatised the utility companies and opened them up to competition and all that happened was they set about squeezing as much money out of us as possible. BT did the same, as soon as they were formed they put the price of a phone call up from 2p to 5p. I well remember having a phone but using the phone box down the street because it was still 2p.
If another company started delivering letters who do you think would end up paying for all the post boxes it would have to install? Not to mention the sorting offices and delivery vans etc.
They wouldn't tolerate losing money and just accept that they are providing a service to the public, no, they would make us pay higher prices so they could make a nice fat profit for their shareholders.0 -
Wow, I’ve finally made it through all 99 pages of this thread! It has been an amazing help to me, as my fianc! and I are just starting out life together, and are getting married next year, so we could do with all the moneysaving we can get!
I don’t have anything to add I’m afraid, as I am only learning all about money saving at the moment, but I have already started to put a lot of these into use! I have been saving all coins into a pot and have £36 already which I put into the wedding account. Yesterday I made a thermos of tea which was enough for both of us all day (normally we’d have been boiling the kettle about ten times in the day!) and only used one teabag – and was amazed to see it was still quite strong! I have been bulking out meals with veg and storing the extra made in the freezer for the week when we don’t have as much time.
Thank you all so much for all of your helpful tips, it is making a big difference to our household. I’m tootling off to the charity shop at lunchtime to have a little nose around there! xMortgage when started (Dec 2013): £157,272.50

My local Tesco (and 2 others near by) have the bag of veg that was on offer for Mothers Day (large chicken plus roast veg for a fiver). Anyway the bag is huge and has probably 10 large potatoes (large enough to be used as baking potatoes anyway), 4 parsnips (large) and eight large carrots all for 40p. I asked at customer services and they said most Tesco stores have them at this reduced price.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. follow on from this, had a really annoying obviuosly pre written email from Royal Mail which told me if i did not pay the fine the card would be sent back to my son and he would have to pay:mad:    I have today had another card put through so think it's a card from another son that was sent late which i will have to get up early and go and pay for:mad:                                  :mad:0 -

they have... that's one of the reasons the prices have gone up! We now have a situation where companies can choose to cream off the easy deliveries from Royal Mail by setting the areas where they will/won't deliver and undercutting RM due to the savings they make. At the same time RM has been forced to keep it's responsibility for providing a service to the entire country. Worst of both worlds!Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

just picked up 2nd card from sorting office, number 2 son sent it in good time with a 1st class stamp(unfortunatly not a large letter 1)but RM just ignore that and hold mail due for excess money back.Asked posties what happens to those items they can't send back to sender and they said they are sent to balfast for shredding! How much does that cost the customers and of course the planet???? so now son will be upset i have not thanked him for the card:mad:  :mad:0 -
