I just thought I'd mention that I tried using Stardrops in the washing machine and it brought the washing up beautifully, sadly it brought the OH out in the most terrible rash - ALL OVER:eek:  and we've spent a small fortune on prescriptions and creams/lotions, so no money saving there:p0

I heard the other dya that from June, Borax will be replaced with a Borax Substitute which deos exactly the same jobs! But it will now be sold in 500g box as opposed to 400g for the same price! Bargain! :T0 -

The article i read was talking about Borates being reclassified, as some tests showed that prolonged consumption of large amounts of Borax can be harmful to unborn babies i think. But the tests they did were on animals, and in one case they gave high levels of borax for 68days to 5 beagles and after 68 days one beagle died and the others showed no sign of harm. I think its all pretty inconclusive and they're just covering their backs really!0

It's not good for your skin and is either restricted or banned (can never remember which) for use in cosmetics. (It use to be used in conjunction with beeswax as an emulsifier in cold creams)0

As an alternative stain remover, you can buy Napisan which comes highly recommended. I saw it in Waitrose and will probably buy that as its easier to get hold of than Borax, meaning I would have to travel to buy Borax but Waitrose is just local.
Next time I make my washing powder I shall use the Napisan instead. Box is 500 gramms and is under £2.00 (can't remember exact price). I think Napisan is Sodium Perborate. I read a few reviews online and they were very positive about its stain removing qualities.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

PS. I remember reading about some people using Borax spread in the carpets to get rid of cat fleas. Maybe it is an insecticide and therefore a bit toxic?????Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
