Sneaky ways to save the pennies

This is a fab thread and I have picked up so many ideas!!
One of the things I do is make sure that I turn my mobile off every night so I only have to charge it half as often. I also find that the battery has lasted a lot longer because of this, in the past I have had to buy a new battery after having the phone a while when I used to leave it on all the time.
Even if you use your phone as an alarm clock, most phones will still alarm even when turned off! (although please test this works first, dont want you all blaming me if you are late for work:rotfl: :rotfl: )
thanks everyone for all the ideas:Tmortgage £800 overpayment 2022. £600/£2400 2023 🙂 savings £1853/£1800 😊0 -

I know it sounds desperately mean, but it's the same as picking up £1 coins - I feel no shame.
 I've never come across a supermarket where I've had to pay to park! Wow! Sorry, slightly off topic I know, but I am astounded!

It is quite normal in London, our local Asda charges as does a smaller Tesco up the road. It is to stop people using their car park and going to shop down the market, go to the movies etc. which means the stores customers can't park! When life hands you lemons, ask for tequilla and salt and give me a call!!!0 -

Also, I may have been known to, er, take toilet rolls home from work...in my defence, a) if they're going to leave stacks of fifty or so just standing there then that's just putting temptation right in my path and b) the company I work for makes billions of pounds profit and I certainly don't see any of that in my wages for the amount of graft I give them!
I wouldn't class that as money saving, I would class it as stealing and think it's disgusting that you are proud of the fact you are stealing to post it on a forum.:mad:0 -
If your family like Saveloys from the chip shop - buy them from a supermarket (got mine from a cheap stall on the market) and keep them at home, then cook and serve with your 'chippie' chips - I paid £1.20 for 6 instead of 99p each from the chippie! Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

I never found borax to be effective at doing anything. It was a load of borrax! What I mean is that it did nothing that I could not achieve with washing soda or cheap stain remover from Superdrug (not sure if they do it anymore) - if people want to use just natural products then I understand that - just not sure it actually is worth the money.
Just lately have been having the urge to make home made washing clothes liquid. Had been buying Lidl woolwash for my darks but I may well make a batch soon - I find it it very therapeutic.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Hi there
This is what I made yesterday but I ended up leaving it as a dry powder mix.
One bar of soap grated (the aqua one gives a nice smell - the kind you get 4 for a pound or so)
One cup of borax (this thread inspired me to use my old supply up)
One cup of washing soda
When I made it into a liquid, I used to make it up in a very large saucepan. You just add water. Bring it to a boil and stir. Then leave. As it cools, it thickens up. When cold transfer to a container. I used to put in a 2L old fabric conditioner bottle using a funnel. If it seems a bit thick - just add more water.
For powder mix - use 1 TBSP
For liquid - use 2 capfuls. You might have to experiment with the amount you need.
I sometimes add eucalyptus oil to the liquid which gives it a nice fresh smellGrocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I was at a friends recently whose washing machine was being repaired. I heard the repair man telling her that she should do an occasional wash (without clothing) on a very hot wash, using washing soda.
He said it was the best thing for clearing out the gunk that accumulates in the pipes etc.
This could be another advantage of using washing powder made with the washing soda?Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
